dsm Posted May 7, 2002 Well, Zaldron is probably one of those guys who's been doing art before he even learned to walk - and then he has far more spare time and a lot more motivation for doing drawings than I have. I lost my drawing motivation when I was about 16 years old, because I got the impression that drawing skills aren't really needed in society, unless your art is almost on par with photography. I've only begun to reclaim my motivation within the last five months or so. I understand how you feel Lüt. It usually annoys the shit out of me when I just finished a drawing I spent a looong time and lots of concentrated work on, and then someone else presents a drawing which looks sooo much better than my own, bah. 0 Share this post Link to post
pritch Posted May 7, 2002 there's a lot more to art than it's absolute quality. dsm, I love those pics, I hope there's more to add to the awesome deviantart site soon. 0 Share this post Link to post
Zaldron Posted May 7, 2002 When I was three years old I was living in California. We we're like, 30 meters away of some railroad, wich was, of course, unpleaseant to say the least. But anyway there was a cross between "my" house's street and the rails, coupled with the classic warning barriers (I don't know what you people call them). For some incredibly odd reason that I cannot begin to understand, for a year I did nothing but draw pics and more pics about those things. From replicas (gross doodles) up to bizarre mutations with 8 barriers and a hundred headlights. I still don't get it. I still have about 20 of these stored in some place. 0 Share this post Link to post
nxn Posted May 7, 2002 you still have the shit you drew when you were 3? I wish I was that lucky, although I do remember drawing stuff back then. 0 Share this post Link to post
Zaldron Posted May 7, 2002 Yeah, I'll scan one of my masterpieces later. 0 Share this post Link to post
nxn Posted May 7, 2002 I could make a replica of the shit I was drawing at 3. Mostly tons of crayons involved, some doodles, I used to try avoid drawing humans since I sucked at those, but objects were a whole nother story. Man, memories... shit I wish I was 5 again, life kicked ass back then. 0 Share this post Link to post
Zaldron Posted May 7, 2002 orion said:shit I wish I was 5 again, life kicked ass back then. Oh yeah. I was in Germany back then, and it rocked. Each day was just pure, untainted fun. No worries, no obligations, no nothing. Really, growing has way more cons than pros. Speaks bad about society. 0 Share this post Link to post
dsm Posted May 7, 2002 pritch said:dsm, I love those pics, I hope there's more to add to the awesome deviantart site soon. Sorry to say that it wont be soon. I've got some rather tough exams to complete over the course of the next two months and thus, I wont be done until end of June. This means that I have little time to write fanfics and little time to work on my drawings. I am, however, working on a non-Doom related drawing as well as adding to/improving my Doom marine drawing, but it wont arrive on deviantart.com for quite a while. Speaking of exams, how are yours going pritch? Are you done yet? Zaldron: Heh, I used to make lots of drawings of trains when I was a kid - there was a period where I was obsessed with trains. Dunno why, I'm completely indifferent to them now. 0 Share this post Link to post
Spike Posted May 7, 2002 I used to get inspiration from the A&E dept at the hospital i used to work at. Seriously, if you want to get gore looking right, there's nowhere better. As for the corpses... 0 Share this post Link to post
Lüt Posted May 8, 2002 orion said:you still have the shit you drew when you were 3? I wish I was that lucky, although I do remember drawing stuff back then. Heh, I remember I was obsessed with flooding. Instead of filling out coloring books normally, I'd get all these coloring books, take a blue crayon and slowly drown everything from bottom to top. It was the most fun when there were people in the pictures. 0 Share this post Link to post
Liam Posted May 8, 2002 I first started drawing when I was three, mostly uh stick figures and shit. I first got my NES then too, and I fell in love with games and wanted to be a game designer so for a long time a lot of my drawings were like 'design sheets' for games I wanted to make. I'd have characters and weapons and 'screenshots' and sometimes write in them like I saw in the gaming magazines. Don't think I have any of that anymore though. Anyway I'm a decent artist. I'm particularly good at comic art really, I'm taking an elective next year to help me improve on drawing slightly more... er, realistic shit. I had an idling thought about starting a webcomic. It would be fun to do but time consuming I s'pose. 0 Share this post Link to post

I had pages and pages of top-view blueprints for a fake game in the likes of Ishar and Eye of the Beholder. 0 Share this post Link to post
Liam Posted May 8, 2002 The one I spent the most time on was probably this epic console rpg I wanted to do, it was like Zelda meets Chrono trigger. I drew out all the bosses and weapons and once I spent like 5 hours drawing this bigass world map for it... just about a year ago I found that map under my bed, goddamn I should've kept that =) I also had this crazyass limbless character (think rayman) that I wanted to use in a sidescroller, I'd draw him in elementary school all the time and it got me real popular, everyone would be "hey liam draw more *insertnameofcrazyasslimblessdudehere* stuff*. 0 Share this post Link to post
Zaldron Posted May 8, 2002 Heh, I have tons of comics of a space dog with superpowers called "Aux". They're my secret shame. 0 Share this post Link to post
Lüt Posted May 8, 2002 Heh I drew a bunch of Zelda and Mario-esque stuff for my own game maps, basically game layouts and stuff. It's all over 10 years old, and I lost almost all of it, but I found 3 of my old old Zelda ones and scanned those, they're here, here and here. (Larger versions here, here and here.) 0 Share this post Link to post

Zaldron Posted May 8, 2002 Then we should all gather and found a company. Our first game will beat the crap out of Dance Dance Revolution. Imagine, 25 levels of pure Macarena-dancing Ralphis. Oh yeah, I can already see it... /me ends up in jail under Crimes against Humanity accusations. 0 Share this post Link to post
Liam Posted May 8, 2002 You can't beat Ralphis doing the Macarena. I mean, think of the multiplayer possibilities. You could have someone hold him down while you beat his face with an iron =) 0 Share this post Link to post
dsm Posted May 8, 2002 Well, I was never really in "contact" with games until I was about 10 years old (I played this catarpillar game when I was about three, but that computer broke down and we didn't get another computer until seven years later). My drawings were based on cartoons, comics, kiddie books and even a tv serie called "Knight Rider" - loved that serie when I was a kid, especially because the "car" was black and looked cool. When I grew a bit older, I began to take an interest in real life stuff and would place an object in front of me and try to draw it - to "copy" stuff (real objects or pictures) is one of the things I'm best at, speaking of which, I "copyed" the Doom titlepic off of the screen years ago, maybe I should scan it and put it up on deviantart. 0 Share this post Link to post
Spike Posted May 8, 2002 Crap - freaky! I've been drawing game characters from Mario and Sonic up to Quake. Remember the game Warcraft 2? I designed a whole 30-page comic for it as my GCSE coursework in Design. Got a B+ too. Wakka! 0 Share this post Link to post

I did some Warcraft1/2 drawings as well - none of them were ever fully completed though and they're all gone now. Btw, seems like someone in charge of this page decided that my Doom marine drawing was worthy of being put up on the DW header - I'm flattered! 0 Share this post Link to post
Spike Posted May 8, 2002 Nice one DSM! Best kinda flattery you can get! I'll see if i can get round to scanning in a couple of the Warcraft comic pages in sometime. I had one of em framed in a rock pub in liverpool for a few months, so that was cool... 0 Share this post Link to post

dsm Posted May 8, 2002 Yeah, you're "in charge" of the page, but are you the one who puts up art too? For all I know you could've "hired" someone to put up art on your page. I wasn't sure about that so I just posted "someone in charge". Anyways, thanx Ling, I'm honoured. Gotta say that my drawing looks awesome in that size :-P 0 Share this post Link to post

I used to draw stuff like that too, and I used to draw big industrial places with billions of lights, red and white barriers, black and yellow barriers etc. I used to be particularly big on traffic lights, road signs and, oddly enough, different types of lamp posts. Yeah, that's right. Street lights. But then they do come in so many fascinating variations? A post-Freudian feminist would probably cite the phallocentric symbolism in the stuff you and me drew, and that it was somehow related to our masculine instincts of power and control (barriers, lights, industrial power, oeder etc.) that we were trying unconciously to develop. I used to draw buildings with amazingly complex and impractical secret rooms in them too, now what's THAT all about? It's fascinating. 0 Share this post Link to post
