Doom Launcher - Doom frontend & database v3.7.4 (12/2023)

Recommended Posts

Anyone else have trouble recording demos with this?  First of all when I try to name it something it names the file a bunch of random characters instead.  Then it only seems to record the first run I do each time I load it up, none of the rest.  This is what the folder looks like:

I've last track of how many times this has come up. Not really poking at you here, I just find it interesting and I probably should have hidden these folders better since they were never intended for the user to touch. If you select the demos tab you should see the demos there. You can right click on the demo you want and select export, or copy.

Ah ok, I had long ago minimized that window at the bottom of the screen as I didn't really look at it for much, so I had no idea that's where I could get them.  Maybe others did the same thing?  Anyway thanks!

Hobomaster22, please consider implementing a dark theme in future versions of Doom Launcher. It's my favorite launcher. In addition to a dark theme, also other themes. Themes based on colors, but also based on different subjects, styles, aesthetics. I don't know how to explain, English is not my first language. What about themes suggested by participants here in the forum? Thanks for Doom Launcher!

i just want to say Doom Launcher is amazing, thanks so much hobomaster. I agree with dmnwizard, a dark theme would be awesome.

i've also got a feature request that may actually already be there? is there a way to apply tags as filters? using the 'tags' button only brings up a sidebar where i can swap between different tabs? not sure what the point of that is. i expected to be able to go into 'local' or 'recent' tabs, select one or more tags and have that tab be filtered accordingly. from what i can see using the tags sidebar is pointless so i think i must be missing something?? not being able to filter by tags seems to make tags without tabs useless except for the highlight color (again i think im missing somthing)

The tabs at the top are tags. When you select a tab it will only show the files associated with that tag. The same is for the sidebar, selecting the item in the sidebar will select that tab. So if you click cacowards it will only show files that you have assigned the cacowards tag.

@DrR0Ck I found a couple problems that I fixed with unmanaged files. Let me know if this works better for you. The best way to update an unmanaged file is to overwrite the file in windows, then right click in Doom Launcher and use the resync option.

https://ci.appveyor.com/project/hobomaster22/doomlauncher/builds/45715044/artifacts

Quick process question for you:  The update you provided me had some great features I am now using daily, but unless I am mistaken, there hasn't been a new release incorporating those changes; the link you provided is the only place those features are available.  I know you've got a lot on your plate and you're not actively developing DoomLauncher at the moment, but I am curious as to whether/when the changes get incorporated in an official release.

Thanks as always for the fantastic tool and your support!

@DrR0Ck finally pushing this update out. Thanks!

Updated to 3.6.4. Mostly a bug fix release for unmanaged files.

Update wad archive to read maps from unmanaged wad files
Fix path checking with unmanaged files when updating files
Fix database search for unmanaged files to use full file path
Implemented save game reading for Helion

Is there a way to use vanilla smooth doom through Doom Launcher on Chocolate Doom? It seems using the -file parameter ends up crashing it. -merge needs to be used instead, but when the wad is loaded through Doom Launcher, the -file parameter is always there even if you specify "-merge vsmooth.wad" through extra parameters. So what you get is "-file vsmooth.wad -merge vsmooth.wad -dehlump" (simply using the .deh file instead doesn't work either).

Only workaround I could find was to put vsmooth.wad into my Chocolate Doom directory and then specify "-merge vsmooth.wad -dehlump" as extra parameters when playing Doom 2 IWAD.

Is there a way to choose which WAD to keep statistics of when you launch multiple files? It always keeps the track of the first file in the order, where I usually put a gameplay mod in.

The statistics are tied to whatever file you selected to launch. So if you want it tracked to a specific file launch that wad and then add the mod as an additional file.

Works like a charm, thanks! Amazing piece of software by the way, gives me a reason to hunt all those pesky secrets and keeps my collection tidy.

You've probably got this question many times but how can I change the path for unmanaged files just short of deleting and replacing them manually?

Just recently I reorganized my wads & mods, I hesitated to do this because I knew this would screw with Doom Launcher, but I did it anyways to avoid thing getting overwritten since everything is in the documents folder

This is almost certainly unsupported, but I have modified a handful of file paths using DB Browser for SQLite to modify the locations directly in the underlying database tables.  You're going to need to locate all instances of the file path and generate an SQL query to replace the old location with the new location.  Back up the database beforehand for obvious reasons.  The database structure is reasonably straightforward, FWIW.

Failing that, and unless I am missing something, via the front end, you would need to delete the old items and drag/drop them in from the updated location.  Of course, if you have a fair amount of custom descriptions, tags, dates, etc., that will all need to be re-added, so if you're comfortable going the database editing route that could potentially save you a lot of work.

Finally, one additional option might be to set up a symbolic link from the old location to the new location:  i.e. if the files were originally in a D:\games\doom_wads folder and they now reside for example on c:\games\wads, a symbolic link will basically map the old location to the new location, assuming the files are still organized in similar fashion.  A quick/easy way to create symlinks is using the program SteamMover.

I'm sure @hobomaster22 will weigh in as he provides excellent support for the tool.

Hopefully this helps!  Feel free to give me a shout if you need additional assistance with any of this.

Thanks for all this! I'd definitely rather go thru SQL code than individually delete and relete every unmanaged wad

There is a folder that keeps backups for you. You can’t edit the SQLite file with notepad. You need to use something like this: https://sqlitebrowser.org/

@hobomaster22

May I suggest something, some kind of UI for scores and comments and screenshots and "title screens" for each map in the wad. Right now we have this for wads. Like, the same kind of list we have for wads now, but "inside" each wad, where each tile represents one level.

It's getting hard to recall each single map the more you play them, and that way people could keep organized map-specific notes, kinda like ONEMANDOOM.

What I've been able to add relatively easily is the ability to add user a defined title and description to images. You can view and edit in the screenshot viewer. Here is what I have so far:

Pardon my ignorance - never used this frontend - but can you save notes / comments per WAD/pk3 file? If not, would you implement this as a feature suggestion?

If you right click the file and select edit there is a description and comments section. If the comments is populated it will show on the right panel when you select the file.

Thanks, you're awesome, wasn't hoping that much for anything.

A small note, screenshot with title/description added should probably have some mark on it in "Screenshots" tab.

Spoiler

Would it be possible to add some kind of selector to this window, probably at the top, before the title, where you could manually select a single "Stats" record from existing Stats for the current wad? (basically one-to-many relationship between Files(screenshots) and Stats tables in DB).

I understand it would probably be impossible to detect it automatically which screenshot relates to which stat record when parsing statistics from source port, but even setting this yourself would be really cool.

While typing this I came to the conclusion that it would serve no actual purpose since the screenshot title alone is enough to understand from which map this screenshot is, so disregard that idea.

Alright, just set it up. This is a pretty good launcher, an upgrade from ZDL for sure.
I have a few questions;
- Would it be possible to configure the Launch dialog to NOT pop up every time? I just want to double-click or click Play and simply get the game launched without a second click or having to press Enter
- With the IWADS and files populated, I can't seem to bring up the View setting for the left hand panel with a right click. I'd like to change it to Grid or small tiles
- Would you consider:
  - adding a Detailed List view mode (as in tabular view) as a fourth option?
  - allow to disable pagination, i.e. no maximum limit of 120 items per page. Doesn't have to be the default of course, but just as a toggleable setting

Yes, it would have to be a global option.

Not sure what this means, I need a better explanation here.

adding a Detailed List view mode (as in tabular view) as a fourth option?

What would be the difference between list view and the grid view that exists now? This is unlikely to change since having different views is pretty difficult to add and maintain.

This can be added.

I can add a drop down to select the map in the edit dialog. If a map is selected it can show the stats for that map.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot you already have the maps list for each wad in Launch dialog. That would be reeeally nice to have, and then titles could be used to give "names" to the screenshots. Thanks in advance.

About the marks in "Screenshots" tab, maybe use screenshot title instead, kinda like Steam does?

I can do the overlay at some point. It requires custom painting which is slightly annoying. I haven't tested it much but the build for adding data to screenshots is here:

Overlay text was just an example, maybe you could put the text under the screenshot, if it's still a problem then any mark will do, even colored border around the screenshots or something like that would be enough.

I really like it, thanks.

Another retarded idea, would it be possible to select map from this context menu, same way we can select tags for wads from the sub-menu. (except right now it's not possible to select multiple screenshot by holding shift/ctrl)
