Doom [4] reveal first impressions

Tompig mentioned that "melee executions could be a good or a bad thing, pre rendered take downs get OLD FAST..."

Yeah, but what do you mean by "pre-rendered"? Are you saying that the player has control over every punch, kick, grab, etc? The player doesn't simply go up to an enemy, press a button, and a bunch of cool shit happens? Or are you just saying it's not pre-rendered because the executions happen quickly and don't break the flow?

So many questions!

According to Pete Hines, the reason they they showed the reveal was to quell all the doubts and negative speculation about Doom and Id. Here's the rest of the story:

Oh, and public reveal is unlikely this year. Sucks to be us indeed.

The last guardian will be released sooner than this Doom.

Then they should have shown everybody.

I don't hope so. If DOOM is as goofy as SS3 I'll pass, or at least download the game for free.

It seems like the gameplay is a lot of wink wink to the carnage of old FPS games in general, while the environments pay fanservice to the four major Dooms specifically. So far I'm expecting something along the lines of the new Splatterhouse, minus the jokes and one-liners.

Obzen, the Mancubus takedown seemed to last the longest, maybe five seconds, while the others were one to two seconds. It seemed like an efficient way to conserve ammo and could potentially be a solid gameplay tactic. I don't recall seeing actual health pickups, but I could be wrong.

ChickenorBeef, I think you're confusing pre-rendered with quick time events. As far as I can tell, it's a one button action and it did not appear to disrupt or freeze gameplay.

Answering these in order.

Rounded screen. Some onscreen effects from what I recall. They dropped to the ground, but the icons for each were visible. Never saw the player utilize a map. The only times enemies were highlighted, from what I recall, was when the player was either training his sights on them, or shooting them, and I also recall seeing it with the very first enemy he encountered. Don't recall any infighting. Damage was procedural, and enemy deaths differed a ton, especially dependent upon which weapon killed them. Finishing moves on enemies could definitely be used to preserve ammo, but I'm not sure how necessary it was, because I was never sure how much ammo the player had. My view of the very bottom of the screen was obscured by the person in front of me.

Thank you Caffeine Freak for being so helpful with what you saw. How did the gore look? Was blood splattered on walls and floors etc? or did it looks cheesy?

Right, the executions were pre-scripted animations that were used when the player did certain things. But they seemed to be selected somewhat randomly.

FLAW_88: the gore looked great, from what I could tell. Both the fresh gore spurting from enemies and the blood pools and streaks from corpses around the base looked good.

There might be one coming. A guy two spots down from me was trying to record it but got busted. They escorted him out...almost got into a fight from the sound of things. Not sure if he got anything or not though.

Damn! They sure weren't kidding when they said attendees only and no recording!

It's a shame no one got a recording.

Yea. I have a feeling that simply no one got any footage or it would have been put up by now. I'm dying to see it. Even if it's just a screenshot. Waiting until this time next year for footage is gunna blow. However, I forgot I have the beta invite, but who knows when the hell that's gunna be released.

Wow. I won't be surprised to see Doom have the absolute most cutting edge graphics now.

One of my bigger concerns for DOOM 4 was that given the high graphics that we all knew it would have would mean less enemies on screen. But somehow their making it work apparently. Very nice.

I'm not sure, from what I hear the game seems to be in a quite advanced state. Then again, the final version of Doom 3 looked significantly better than the alpha and that's not just the extra details.

Well, my hope after hearing that this Crytek guy was hired is that after the new Doom gets released and hopefully its a financial success, that perhaps he will help in making the sequel to the new Doom which I assume would be a Hell on Earth scenario and hopefully would have beautiful, HUGE environments with tons of demons in them. IMAGINE THE AWESOMENESS!

So, what folks are posting, say that Doom we are going to get is by minimum, a decent game, on max, quite awesome game, and possibly GOTY stuff?

Color me really interested.

For everyone who's worried that the monsters' origins might be biological bullshit, I refer you to this:

Caffeine Freak said:There were bodies and pieces of bodies dangling everywhere, among glowing pentagrams. [/B]

Last time I checked, glowing pentagrams weren't part of genetic or robotic research. I'm pretty sure we're getting demons from Hell. :)

No official footage this year? Arrggh, it burns!!! At least we should expect them to take the tech and the game even further in the AWESOME department!

This really pisses me off. I wanna see the damn game. Maybe if we spam their twitter they will change their minds.

Not likely to happen, but judging by the fact that everybody's basically dying to see anything, it might.
