dybbuk81 Posted November 8, 2017 Made this a few years ago with a map two days ago as an intro/entrance to accompany it. I'm wanting to create an "alternate universe" game where Wolfenstein and doom, catacombs and quake, none of those existed, and id software never came up with 3D. Instead a little series of games called "The Abaddon Trilogy" started it all. This is the second, no slopes and quake/hexen stuff yet. Just doom without hubs. the first would be like nitemare 3-d meets Wolfenstein 3-d meets catacombs 3-d. I have a lot to figure out though 1 Share this post Link to post

Tango Posted November 12, 2017 (edited) I've been using git in my workflow for all my recent modding, which means that I can pretty easily go back and track progress on my maps retrospectively. So here's a timeline for a map I've been working on, which is based on map01 of Back to Thunder Road by @ZaBigBoss. I think the original map is awesome (maybe cute is a better descriptor), and the text file is permissive re: using the maps as a base, so it seemed like the perfect candidate to give a full transformation to, as lately I've been finding it much harder to make something successfully from total scratch. Here's what the original looks like: Spoiler (red arrow shows where the screenshot below is taken from) I knew I wanted to open the map up a lot and introduce some really tall "mountains," but at this point I didn't really know yet what to do with the indoor areas; the combination of really tall outdoor area + me not wanting to deal with 3d floors made me stuck on this for a while. Spoiler Later I started sculpting out more of the mountains and adding more trees/water, but still obviously didn't know what to do with the indoor base area yet: Spoiler Then finally I guess I got a ton done in this session, and decided to totally scrap the existing indoor areas as they were, and make a lot of adjustments to the main outdoor area that's been in all of these shots so far: Spoiler And here's a bonus shot, looking toward the main outdoor area from a different direction: Arriving at those ceiling-less (ie outdoor) base/brick areas in there ^^ was really tricky for me, as it feels much harder to make a structure look cool when you don't have a ceiling to use Then finally, here's the map in its current state: Spoiler Editor shot but with floor textures visible, to give you a better idea of playable area (the sand flat) vs the mountains (all the darker brown rocks): Taken from approximately the same place as the bonus shot in the last bunch.
