And yes since it doesn't leave a corpse normally, it means it can only be raised in some very specific, niche situations: when sector movement (like a closing door, or a crusher) flattens it during its death animation. If an actor is already dead and it gets ground down to a pool of blood, then the engine will directly put it in the pool of blood state, even if it hadn't finished playing its death animation. (You can also see this in how explosive barrels, when crushed, can also leave pools of blood...) Of course, when a squished actor is raised, it is raised as a ghost because of a bug. As a consequence, pain elementals can, in unmodded vanilla, only be raised as ghosts. Finally, the pain elemental raise states are very useful for DEHACKED purposes, because it's a nearly free source of frames that can be repurposed elsewhere. Compatibility with DEHACKED mods means that ZDoom absolutely has to have these states there. 15 Share this post Link to post
