I am beginning to wonder if something similar could be invented for generating things sprites.

Sprites are done from 3D model scans usually. Theoretically possible is a program that can do a model from intersect of silhouettes from different angles, but the amount of 3D geometry is too hardcore. The development would probably be goddamn long. Then there would be just applied projective texture mapping (I have already written a simple one from 4 ortho angles except the top and bottom). Anything non-convex would cause missing texture coordinates, and would lead to writing complicated workaround (or maybe those would have to be filled by some flood algorhytm based on shortest route between closest textured triangles?) or manual fix. Textures for the mapping would be taken from scans directly. As an input you would probably need sprites for angles 0,90,180,270 and output would be 45,135,225,315. Theoretically maybe just input 0,135,225 and output 5 other? Material masks, ambience, specularity and all this stuff would need to exist for every input sprite. Also you would have to do this for every frame like walking, shooting and so on. The obstacle sprites would be a lot easier. Probably totally same algorhytm as I use for textures.

I'll take a look-see at that build if I get a chance, should be really nice. Are you open to feature suggestions as well as bug reports?

Yes, though it's probably best to continue this discussion here instead. And on the GitHub issue tracker.

-snip-

Well of course, but I don't mean the kind of sprites made from actual 3D object scans.

Avoozl: As I have written, rotation-less sprites would be just a bit more difficult than textures. Cylindric distortion of texture = column sprite? But complex objects are impossible without 3D models or manual drawing.

Is that a sideways scrolling mostly transparent midtexture? That's seriously cool!

They do slightly look like pork chops to me though. :)

Jah. Dumb fact: the texture used for the vein walls in the third shot actually were made by taking a picture of a raw steak, zooming in, and tiling/recoloring it :P

@lupinx-Kassman I was thinking blood cell shaped little rocks. Interesting theme. Like the giant syringe in the sky.

Meanwhile in EGA land... the sky has 2 scrolling layers, kinda like in Quake. Separated the lightmap from the COLORMAP and added a LIGHTMAP which is what the COLORMAP used to be. Now COLORMAP is just a translation table for light colors. Should make it easier to (re)make lightcolors (if I change the palette). Need to add a FOGMAP or something.

I added an option for changing the palette colors into EGA colors, it's still the same PLAYPAL as earlier. Screenshots show all palette effects.

Just some action shots from a map I've been working on. I feel like I'm getting a grasp of Doombuilder and Slade. Practice, practice, practice!

is that a new lost soul sprite, or an imp's fireball?

That is the Soul Harvesters homing fireball attack. Monsters and textures are from Realm 667! Lots of great stuff to use for maps.

Monroeville mall? Dawn of The Dead.

Not quite.  Its actually Rolling Acres Mall, which due to unfortunate circumstances, no longer exists in the real world.

Ah Rolling Acres Mall! Okay I remember watching an urban exploration video of it by Dan Bell.

I took a bit of a hiatus from Cereal Killer but i'm back with two near complete maps! Also finally found a shade of blue that works with the rest of the custom palette (or it at least it does in my opinion). :)

I took a bit hiatus and I finished making this megawad, Unfortunately, I can't upload this game to an FTP, I used Firezella and it didn't work, I don't know how to use andFTP to do it, here's a glimpse of what the megawad looks like.

Rolling Acres mall, huh? I happen to live in the area, I've driven up there a few times. I remember when it was still open, everything was so dusty and empty, not many stores were even open in its last years. The last time I was there, the shipping/receiving part of the building was seemingly taken over by some warehouse company, the glass facades were shattered all over the ground, and the doors were boarded up (though broken by trespassers). I never went inside, however, it doesn't seem like the wisest thing to do. Especially not when there's people still working there (even if only a small section of it).

I don't know why I feel the urge to mention this, but one time I sped around the parking lot chasing birds and running litter over. It was fun for all of about 3-5 minutes until I got bored of it.

Maybe try CoreFTP? It worked for me when Filezilla didn't.

And on this day, dobu made a sawmill, so all the trees in the land may be cut down

It looks like there is an actual tree drawn in linedefs in the middle of the map...
