Nine Inch Heels Posted May 13, 2017 13 minutes ago, MysteriousHaruko said: I just opened the door and cyberdemon said "surprise!!!" :') The problem with placing cybies behind doors oftentimes is that people either do it "wrong/right" on purpose, or they do it "wrong/right" without knowing. If your idea is to create a map that can be completed on first attempt, you might want to make sure that either the cybie is not too close to the door, so people have some more time to react, or you can compensate for a nasty setup by allowing players to take a hit without dying instantly. The problem with the second method is that as soon as people know about that cybie, you'll have given them too many resources. The issue with the first method is that more experienced players will deem it too easy. In other words, you can't make everybody happy anyway. ;-) Another method would be to be place that cybie with the back to the door, while making sure players can't just sneak past him. That way they can prepare for the encounter without being able to skip it easily. Other methods involve "reveals" in which the cybie is in a box that slowly opens up, or have the cybie in a "pit" that slowly raises. The last two methods are relatively elegant in my opinion, and they also create some suspense, because the player has less time to evaluate the situation, since it's only a matter of seconds until the big guy starts moving. There's lots of ways you can do this, and you may find it fun to experiment with them and see where they work best. 1 Share this post Link to post

I have a hunch it was included on accompanying CD that came with the Waite Group's Doom Construction Kit book. Galaxia is a classic, famous especially for its immersive storyline (even though gameplay is a bit lacking, unless you like tunnel mazes and TNT map22...). It's one of the top ten of 1994 from 10 Years Of Doom (so, the cacowards before the cacowards began, approximately). Edited May 13, 2017 by RjY 3 Share this post Link to post

It would be great to do project where people help polish wads and gives them new shine and fame. 0 Share this post Link to post

I had an oil and pastel look in mind, but it turned out looking more like crayon. Incidentally my oil and pastel pastel paintings in grade school also looked like crayon, so at least I've remained consistent? yeah this is insanely cool. looking forward to it :) 0 Share this post Link to post

Makes me think perhaps id should have tried getting a bit more creative with that feature. Hell, they could've made all sorts of textures unique to single areas of single levels, and not have the IWAD be any bigger but maybe a few kb. 2 Share this post Link to post

Da Werecat Posted May 18, 2017 There were some textures tailored to specific locations during the development, but the idea was largely abandoned after Hall's departure. 0 Share this post Link to post
Dragonfly Posted May 19, 2017 (edited) Working on my mayhem 2017 map. Enjoying working with some goofy, high colour super-low-res textures :P I think I may soften the lighting in some places, we'll have to wait and see. :P Edited May 19, 2017 by Dragonfly 12 Share this post Link to post
Koko Ricky Posted May 20, 2017 BTW I wanted to mention, I'm pretty sure Galaxia appears on the "Maximum Doom" portion of the "Master Levels for Doom 2" compilation CD. I played it in the last couple of years and was surprised by how well it's held up. 0 Share this post Link to post
