They absolutely did not place every pixel by hand, however. If you've messed with Deluxe Paint ][, which is what they used even up to Quake 2 (!), you will recognize some of these artifacts. If I remember correctly it has some type of blur tool which is probably where the odder color choices came from. If you play around with the gradient tools and other things in that program you can very quickly make something that captures the Doom feel. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Da Werecat Posted December 11, 2014 I had a suspicion that they weren't exactly working in true color, but in any case it was always pretty apparent that they had access to advanced tools for gradients, color blending, etc. Even if the result of each operation was shoehorned into the palette on the fly (as far as I understand). Interesting. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Tango Posted December 11, 2014 yeah those look really great. the cacodemon and stalker look particularly fitting (they all look cool though), would love to see those turned into real monsters. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Thanks for the linkage. I would have missed it. I'll submit at least one. EDIT: Here's my submission. (that, and a recolor of my current avatar icon) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Da Werecat Posted December 13, 2014 Yeah, 20. I've wasted the remaining 5 on a range that I didn't even use. I'm so good at this shit. By the way, it was made with aspect ratio correction in mind, but now I'm actually thinking about resizing it, while there's still time for dealing with consequences. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

For those interested, Grafx2 is a free modern deluxe-paint inspired program to make art the way they did for many old games. A lot of what people call pixel art was a form of manual dithering to create details to improve something they painted while being bound to the limited color pallet. edit ; adding a link to their current homepage ; http://pulkomandy.tk/projects/GrafX2 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Enjay Posted December 14, 2014 I still have installed, and still occasionally use (via DOSBox) DPaint. I've tried a few "modern implementations" but I don't remember if I have seen GrafX2 before so I'm going to give it a try. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Da Werecat Posted December 14, 2014 Thanks, guys. My final submission: I think it was worth redoing the proportions. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I also think it was worth. However, now that the guy's hand isn't visible, it might be unclear what his arm actually is for a viewer who haven't seen the previous version of the sprite. I'd be confused what he's doing with the arm there. No problem of course, I've probably just wanted to find something to say. :P 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Da Werecat Posted December 14, 2014 Thanks. Well, the idea was that the guy is pressing something on the control panel. I don't think it's perfectly clear either, but now that I'm looking at the previous version, I'm not sure it was better there. Anyway, there's no time for any serious changes, so I'll have to cope. :) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
