Where does Doom 64 take place?

Yeah, the way I figure it, either game could be seen as a sequel to Doom 2. It would be kind of ridiculous to lump them both into the chronology and try to figure out which preceded the other.

What I meant was, wasn't it somehow confirmed by the devs (as little as they care about the plot) that Doom 64 is "canon" and a direct sequel to "Doom II"?

Williams made Final Doom for PSX right before Doom 64. I figure they were including it in "the military episodes code-named Doom." But you can obviously think whatever you want because it's just vague enough. I prefer considering them to all fall on a shared timeline :P

I feel like at some point, I considered that Doom 64 takes place on one of the moons of a planet beyond Mars, such as Jupiter or Saturn.
