geo Posted September 28, 2018 Games without music or games that use soundfonts use much less file space. This 10 MB thing would be an interesting challenge. Halloween is coming... might be time to make Revenant Quest. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

It's an idea I've had for years now without the time to make it. 4x the size so people can see it: Don't mind the white. Just makes Revy easier to see. Xeriphas1994 Posted September 28, 2018 Logic? The Fool's Errand and 3 in Three are timeless. Action platforming? Some people still like Bio-Menace (check the credits for a possible explanation). You didn't specify the OS, so I'll also mention System's Twilight and Bill the Demon for posterity. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Dark Pulse Posted November 25, 2018 I dunno if you'd call it a "best game," but I remember a little FPS-style tech demo that made some noise back in 2004 called .kkrieger. Its main thing? The whole game was 96 KILOBYTES. It achieved this through procedural generation of just about everything. The monsters, the weapons, the textures... everything. Quote Textures are stored via their creation history instead of a per-pixel basis, thus only requiring the history data and the generator code to be compiled into the executable, producing a relatively small file size. Meshes are created from basic solids such as boxes and cylinders, which are then deformed to achieve the desired shape - essentially a special way of box modeling. These two generation processes account for the extensive loading time of the game — all assets of the gameplay are reproduced during the loading phase. Source code for it is online too for those curious in poking around. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
[McD] James Posted November 25, 2018 (edited) Even though this game is 20MB, I'm mentioning it anyway, because it's fantastic. It's worth playing for the cat Easter egg alone. https://store.steampowered.com/app/286100/You_Have_to_Win_the_Game/ Edited November 25, 2018 by Ajora 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

I've forgotten a "classic" : Anacreon 4021 One of the earlier "4X" games (Xploration, Xpansion, Xploitation, Xtermination), in which you run an interstellar empire, first published in 1987. There's a Windows edition - latest is v2.1d published in 2005, under 2.5 MB unzipped : http://neurohack.com/anacreon/ The graphically minimalist DOS version is still around (latest revision in 2004), it's under 1MB. There's also a new version online, but that's off-topic. Not really an action game, but very good anyways ! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

elend Posted December 7, 2018 While not really under 10 MB, I really want to mention Locomalito's games. https://www.locomalito.com/ They are for the most part free and of very, very high quality, especially titles like Malditta Castillam, Hydorah or Curse of Issyos. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
HorrorMovieRei Posted December 7, 2018 Under 10mb is a bit of a tall order. One game I've been playing on and off that's like that is Kobo Deluxe. Another one which is kinda of interesting is ZZT, which is easy to get on the Internet, although I can't remember right now if it is technically freeware nowadays. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
elend Posted December 7, 2018 Please check out Cho Ren Sha 68k. It's a Shoot'em Up from Japan and really quite amazing. It may not feature a huge level diversity, but it has an amazing soundtrack and tight gameplay. And it's about 1.0 MB in Size. GuyMcBrofist Posted December 8, 2018 (edited) ^ Nice! I played that game and lost it a long time ago. Speaking of which, no one has mentioned Warning Forever yet. http://www.hikware.com/Prod/index.html#wf Edited December 8, 2018 by GuyMcBrofist 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
elend Posted December 8, 2018 Oh yes, that was also a very good one! Played that one as well, back then. On topic though, one might also check out the games listed on pouet.net (demoscene resource). The games are usually really small, since size coding is a big part of the demoscene, and if sorted by rating you can be sure to have some interesting titles at the top. Check it out! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Vanessa Posted December 8, 2018 Something I would do for sure is download PAC-MAN. Shouldn't be too big a file size, and I know damn well there are free downloadable versions of the original game, shit, I've had one since 2003!....well, my dad had it. I just use it as well 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

TheNoob_Gamer Posted March 13, 2020 ....Digging this thread up with a few more notable names. The Dark Mod - Thief in Doom 3. Don't be fooled by the name. Has a lot of community-made missions. Hyperrogue - Taking place on a hyperbolic plane, this game features hexagons. Lots of hexagons. Your objective is to collect some amulet. The game is technically (zipped) 8MB without music. Also, not free, but Micro Mages (NES, PC) is worth checking out, both in the novelty and gameplay. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Plugging .Kkrieger for a short shooter with Doom3 visuals. 96 kilobytes. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

General Rainbow Bacon Posted March 14, 2020 (edited) For logic you could try this: http://www.joriswit.nl/sokoban/ and this https://www.myabandonware.com/game/quadrax-ccw if you have DOSBox.
