Making Doom Textures (INDEX)

Recommended Posts

Okay so I know there was a thread on this and I can't find it for the life of me... However I am wondering what (free) software I can use to edit and make Doom textures in index and with layers. Thanks a bunch!

Me too. Make sure to import Doom palette into its list of predefined palettes. I forgot how did I do it years ago, it might not be trivial, but not too hard either. Then, when converting a RGB png image into Doom palette, go to Image -> Mode -> Indexed, choose the Doom palette and uncheck "remove unused colors". To convert an indexed image back to RGB, simply go to Image -> Mode -> RGB. Preferably work with images in png format, they're easy to work with in GIMP and you can easily convert them to "Graphic (Doom)" format in SLADE3, using "Graphic -> Convert to" (in SLADE3).

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting about this because you only ever have to do it once. The easiest way is to open an image that already has the correct palette (any graphics exported by SLADE will) and go Windows -> Palette then right-click on the list of palettes, click Import Palette and select Image.

Just for clarity: We are talking about "Graphic -> Export as PNG" feature of SLADE3, not regular export. PNG export is the correct way to save the palette into the exported graphic.

Reminder that SLADE 3 can export palettes to the formats used by GIMP (.gpl) and PaintShop Pro (.jasc).

On Windows, palettes go in <GIMP install dir>/share/gimp/2.0/palettes
