Sergeant_Mark_IV made some good points, and he clearly knows more about modern FPSs than I do...but I still don't think it looked terribly interesting. This was clearly supposed to be Hell on Earth, and it looked like it was trying to suggest as such, but a boner I did not get. This is Doom, for fuck's sake, and I was expecting Earth to look appropriate futuristic. Give us some kind of Blade Runner/5th Element/cyberpunk future with all kinds of crazy shit in addition to the demon invasion. What they developed was a more-or-less contemporary looking setting, including soldiers wearing already outdated gear. Outdated, 20th century looking, bulky gear, including gigantic fucking radios. It's stupid. Really stupid. Visually, I actually like what I was seeing (even if it was generic), but it did not convey that Doom-y feeling we were all hoping for.

I really don't get the whole "let's make this obviously futuristic game look like the 20th century" aesthetic going on in those screenshots. Sure, Doom 2 had a lot of randomly archaic textures, but that is a flimsy excuse. It's like they didn't want to really put the effort into designing a unique looking world. If there is a Doom 5, I'm sure they'll have learned their lesson by then.

Those leaked videos and screens look and feel NOTHING like DOOM. On the other hand, it's amazing how much DOOM the 2014 and the new teaser evoke. It seems like they got their shit sorted out. Judging by everyone's reactions I think the conclusion would be that my taste is horrible because aesthetics of those pre-rendered cinematics are exactly how I'd want Hell on Earth to be. It's funny, everyone's complaining about 'gritty and realistic' while to me games are not serious enough. Everything's trying to be goofy and exaggerated these days. I feel like the current version of DOOM4 might not appeal to me, if they made it too silly.

I'm going to reiterate my stance: It didn't look like the future. It looked like the present, with a lot more debris. There was almost no effort to make you feel like anything had changed in what was probably supposed to be the 22nd century, if the game was following Doom 3's canon. The worst part of it is the stupid bulky gear on the humans. The U.S. military is already developing more compact tech and exoskeletal suits, while this canned version of Doom was more akin to something from the 80s.

Eh, looked sort of Generic. Could've been a fine game on it's own, but clearly not an actual Doom title. I wouldn't mind seeing this thing remade or re purposed for some future project.
