I'm not going to read your post if you're just going to go all caps and intentionally misinterpret what I say just to argue with me. I'll read your posts when you read mine properly, thanks.

Source to claim what?
You're the one making absolutely absurd claims, so naturally you should be the one supplying sources. So far all you have done is more or less state that if it's not a rainbow, it's grey or brown. It's like having a discussion with someone who claims 2 + 2 is 1.

I'm not and I provided enough evidence to show, if you want you can look for the type of games I am talking about and you'll find them EASILY as 90% of the games today look like that. I don't even need to show the examples I showed, because there's so many obvious examples which you've probably played yourself if you play newer games.

I'm certainly not disagreeing with you with those games, but a lot of games were colourful in the '90s and early 2000s. Personally I think those particular games you listed are what started the whole brown/grey/orange/blue filter look.

I shouldn't even be saying the textures themselves lack colour, because it's more to do with what several others have pointed out here-- that it's colour grading making it look so lacking and soulless.

What the fuck do you expect a concrete bunker to look like? A ball pit?

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with anyone in this thread, but mother of god those comments made me laugh out loud..

I expect all concrete bunkers to have a couch with character. Something that one of the hipster rebels stitched together over a week while he or she was busy not fighting to keep humanity alive. Just because the world has been taken over by demons doesn't mean we have to put up with generic couches.

I would definitely think it's damn silly if a scifi hallway was purple or something instead of metallic and gray. But it's always possible to add some caution patterns or warning signs to suddenly add color.

It could also add some paneling that's kind of a military green or blue rather than gray. I'd be fine with brown too.

Thing is, if it weren't for friggin Color Grading, I think none of this would be a problem at all. Color grading is one of the post processing effects I hate most.

I'm with Touchdown and, strangely, sarge mk4 on this footage. I'm not disliking it at all. Sure, the final game would've needed a transition into a more hellish environment to work as a whole, but I would not in any way mind if the beginning, even the first half of the game was like that. It's a good, reasonable interpretation of the hell on earth theme. Something that Doom 2 could not do, but probably would've if it could. The scenario is realistic (as realistic as a hell invasion story can get), and I personally never minded a bit of grayness/brownness so long as it makes sense contextually (so like it's ok if the environment is a ruined city, but it's not ok if the environment is something like a forest with a color filter). I am sad that I'll never find out who these characters were, what was going to happen in that game, etc. It looked interesting to me.

Maybe I've just never seen Doom as this cartoony balls-to-the-wall action game people often try to remember it as. The colorfulness didn't really ruin the atmosphere back in the day since the 3d-ish graphics were a very young thing, but I'm pretty sure that if a modern game was as garish as Doom 1 was at points, it would be really hard to take the environment seriously. And I really, really don't see the need for random splashes of color here and there - they wouldn't make an environment more interesting for me at all. To me it matters what the environment is, not what it looks like.

Although that is not to say that the hell on earth theme is difficult to interpret in a much more interesting and unique way than this footage showed. Basically, I think it would've been fine but it would not have been anything outstanding. I would've been content with that personally, but I guess for some people it's an awful thought when it's about Doom, and I can understand that.

Also, kinda strange to see people expecting super futuristic blade runner cities. I never got the impression that earth was like that in the doom universe. Doom 2 clearly shows that the cities looked like modern cities, and I seriously doubt that in reality we're ever gonna have cities like that even when we start cololizing other planets and such. But who knows.

The only way I can see Call of Doom working is if it was just the first level of the game when you play as a regular soldier/resistance member hear the motivational speech and see people hyped up but as soon as your squad actually encounters demons they loose their confidence and while they don't outright drop their weapons and run away they stopped with their stupid one liners and poser bravado. At the end of the map you get mortally wounded and just a second before you die you hear a gunshot and see the monster that killed you dropping dead. In the next map you start as Doomguy right next to a corpse of your previous character and fight alone for the rest of the game. The name is Doom so fuck this teenage movie ,,WE CAN DO IT JUST BE ENERGETIC AND SAY STUPID SHIT FROM TIME TO TIME'' bullshit.

Beautiful snow-covered forest.

Also, I'd rather a dark, surreal, nightmarish cyberpunk/gothic horror story than generic military vs bat aliens but alright.

I think it could have been okay if there had been some goddamn demons; I dunno how so many screns were leaked without showing a single enemy! My main issue was that it didn't look like what a 21st century Doom 2 should be. I know asking for a Blade Runner-type setting is a bit much, but very little of those images felt Doom-y to me.

This actually sounds kinda interesting.

Glad they rethinked the idea, still they should reuse this work to do something else and not just throw it into trash can

I hope the doom 4 team decides to release the "what could have been" content or commentary at some point. A lot of good games and films could have been disastrously better or worse and often are included with special/collector's editions of the game/movie. I'd be truly interested to hear directly from the team why they canned it all.

must be hard to have all your work shit canned, even if it is for the right reason.

maybe some of it was for rage 2. which i still hope for.

I seriously doubt that considering it was a separate team working on Doom 4, Rage 2 had already started development by id software's main team. Wasn't it AFTER the scrapping of Doom 4 that they moved their main team to Doom? So why would they use anything that second team did?
