Revenant Theories

Recommended Posts

Expanding a little on the "Revenant is a reanimated Archvile" theory. Archviles can't resurrect other archviles nor bosses, which leads me to belive they can't resurrect monsters that are on a similar or higher level than themselves, maybe because it would be too demanding on their bodies.
The best they can do when resurrecting their fellow archviles without putting themselves in danger is reanimating them as skeletons. The resulting monster is then fitted with the usual rockets and becomes the revenant. Now he's too weak to use his reanimating and fire abilities, but he still has enough magic left to control his rockets.

Expanding a little on HorrorMovieGuy's theory: We know that Archvile doesn't even try to resurrect fellow Archviles while fighting Doomguy. Let's assume it's actually because it would be too demanding for him. But why does he not resurrect them as Revenants while fighting Doomguy? Because that would be also demanding for him! Actually, when an Archvile tries to resurrect another Archvile, he needs to give him half of his own power, and half-an-Archvile-power is just enough to create a Revenant. Therefore, the resurrected Archvile is spawned as a Revenant, but the Archvile-healer now only has half his power and so he turns into another Revenant! The Archvile can do it anytime, but he never decides to do it while Doomguy is around, because he feels that he can combat Doomguy better as one Archvile who keeps his resurrecting abilities, than 2 Revenants created if he sacrificed his resurrecting abilities.

That's a very thorough explanation. Can this theory be demonstrated with a .deh?

I had this weird idea of a mechanic where the Archvile could resurrect the Spider Mastermind and/or the Cyberdemon but would die in the process, like it's giving its own life to resurrect their best forces. Seems like that would be fair, you'd have to deal with the resurrected boss but the Archvile's out of your hair.

^He would resurrect them while also fuse with them to enhance their abilities. Poor Archvile dies, but the big Muta-Cyber-Archvile / Muta-Spider-Archvile lives! With special sprite sets and more powerful attacks than ever before, of course.

@Job: Probably not without significant side effects. I can imagine a solution, but the Archvile would need to either lose his ability to revive other monsters than Archviles, or he would turn into Revenant after resurrecting any monster; in addition, his new Revenant form couldn't attack the player anyhow, or it would attack him in regular intervals without checking line of sight; in addition, he would keep his AV sounds and speed after his transformation; in addition, he couldn't enter pain state, otherwise the effect would break...

I see only 1 problem with this theory. Where the Hell does the rocket launcher come from? I find it hard to believe that even in hell, something can come from nothing.
On that note, why does the revenant look like it fires both missile launchers when it fires only one rocket?

Where does the Cyberdemon get his rocket supply from? Why do the rockets shoot out of his crotch? Where do resurrected zombies get their dropped weapons back from?

I'm going with my theory that Revenants are stitched together with various kinds of human bones, not necessarily from just one being. That or the demons found some absurdly tall human skeletons. Or maybe the Revenant is only scaled tall like that so that they could squeeze in more detail due to the Doom engine having a pretty low pixel density at the time. Yeah, that would make sense right?

The answers are respectively Dark Magics, Darkk Magicks, and Daark Majyyks.

Lego Worlds allows you to play as a skeleton, the skeleton's initial attack is a goofy punch, accompanied by an obnoxious scream.

Coincidence? I think not!

Yeah... I can't believe I missed this obvious fact. No more problems with scifista42's theory.

If they start doing a stupid chest bump and fire missiles, then we'll talk

Okay.

Doomguy is actually sleeping, and all we're playing is his nightmare. He's a Vietnam veteran (which explains the guns and military background of doomguy) who just got done watching Legend with Tom Cruise, which reminded him of The Color of Money, which is why the game is called Doom and filled with demonic creatures.

What if....it's still 1993 and John Romero has overdosed on diet Pepsi and Pez candy and we are all a sugar induced hallucination? In other words, we exist only in John Romero's mind and each of us represent a different aspect of his personality.

Doom is a state of mind. Plutonia is a state of agitation.

What if...Revenant's are the resurrected remains of Doomers who played through Plutonia and became so agitated by so many chaingunners, mancubui, arch-viles and revenants that they had a heart attack and died? Like they became so agitated their hearts exploded or something.

The cyberdemon inserts the rocket as suppositories and they travel to its arm through a series of complex tubes.

Pain Elementals are elementals of pain. Living pain.

Revenents are elementals of agitation. Living Agitation.
