But double jumping are you fucking serious guys? Can we be that much of a fucking copycat of other games designed around "speed" that you had to add double fucking jumping?

I think double jumping controversially goes against what makes exploration interesting, because it allows to reach areas which potentially could be used for secrets, I mean areas reachable from another way around in the map.

But it can also be utilized to reach actual secrets. It will depend on the particular level design they come up with. But generally speaking about double jumping itself, I don't think it "goes against what makes exploration interesting" at all, I actually see it more like vice versa.

Now seriously, yeah, it can be solved placing some secret areas a little higher. We'll see how it works.

Not at all, you just have to make that walkway or ledge high enough to not be reached with a double jump.

Actually double jumping provides good opportunities to create some less obvious alternative paths in levels. Kind of similar how they did it with the semi-hidden alternative underwater paths in Quake 2.

I like the double jump, and the climbing too. I think they can work very well to create alternative routes in the levels and make the exploration interesting, I really hope they will put some kind of secret areas. Also I think that they can make the combat situations more interesting, allowing to use the environment with all the possible advantages/disadvantages that may occur.

A bit late, but I wanted to say that I fully agree with what Hoodie wrote in the original post. The pattern is the same with movies and other forms of entertainment. I guess people like familiar shit they can relate to.

I agree that it wasn't the ONLY reason why it was fun. But when I played Doom for the first time in 1993. I recall how awesome it was when I first shot down a pinky demon with a chaingun. Back then the fact that the bodies stayed there on the floor, instead of blinking out of existence in most other games was considered (at least by me) to be one of the coolest fucking things I've even seen in a game up until that point.

Back then I remember having a debate with kids at school. "Mortal Kombat, you could perform Finishers on people" vs "In Doom you see what the player sees, and the dead bodies stay there". that may not seem like much now, but at the time, it was fucking amazing!

When people say Doom wasn't a good game, or popular because of its gore. I have to turn around and say, no, that's historically inaccurate! Blood and violence was a major, major, MAJOR seller back in the early 90s. It was unprecedented to see blood and gore for the most part.

Could it have been a good game without gore? yea probably. Could it have made a cultural impact, and gain the attention it did without gore; hell fucking no. Anyone that claims otherwise wasn't there.

I def rolled my eyes a bit when I saw double jumping.

Just because vertical movement is suddenly this new popular thing lately thanks to Titan Fall and Advanced Warfare, and UT4 is making a comeback, doesn't mean Doom 4 needs it!!!!

Even UT4 doesn't have double jumping anymore, even though I clearly see it in the code. I think it's only if you have the boots.

We're going from a game with 0 jumping to 2 jumping :D


I'd be fine with mantling walls or something since it can be a bit ridiculous to not be able to scale a knee height obstacle, or even a waist height obstacle. But double jumping just feels like a copout in the case of DooM. Makes it easier for level designers to not plan for how to let the player reach areas, just let them double jump... I'd almost rather he had a high jump height. Doom was originally on martian moon bases. The gravity shouldn't even be high. They could've used that as a game mechanic or something. Doom guy was never supposed to be some power armor exosuit wearing dude, just a regular ol' space marine wearing armor. I read somewhere that Doom guy technically runs at about 65 MPH.



Heh, also in the gameplay teaser, did anyone else think, Why the HELL is he climbing on top of the crate? Just go around and use it for cover. Guess they had to show off how it's possible to climb crates.



Also, i personally don't give any #@%! about super fast movement. When I played that ROTT game I rolled my eyes upon moving my character and moving probably double the speed you move at in classic doom. Like, really? Insanely fast movement and giant floaty coins is what they think people crave from classic 90's shooters? Not the good level design and focus on gameplay over linear and boring pointless cutscenes like in Battlefield 4? I personally would prefer slower slightly more realistic movement in a way. I feel like Counterstrike isn't too bad. It's frustrating to be moving too slowly, and having like 2 second sprints like you do in some modern games. Infinite sprint is how it should be in a game like Doom for sure. Just move at a jogging pace but somewhat faster.


Anyway, I'm still going to enjoy it. I'm over the double jumping thing. I think they'll find ways to make it fun and hide cool secrets. I know I'm probably not going to use it for anything but getting around in the single player campaign. It'll probably be easier to take cover behind a corner than to randomly run around all over the place and do double jumps. It's inevitable that it'll be essential to multiplayer though.

Totally agree with this sentiment. If the new Doomguy had the same speed of the original Doomguy, it would look ridiculous.
