Where's the pistol?

But the original games had a pistol, and it worked fine.
It wasn't a great weapon, but that was the point.
It worked great for the early levels, then you grabbed the shotgun, usually within the first 2 levels, and you were set.
Now think about that, but with the new game's upgrades and attachments, and just maybe the pistol will be a good, viable weapon through the whole game.
Don't go making these assumptions of gameplay for a game you've only seen 15 minutes of footage from.

With the way the new pistol looks, here's hoping it can become the equivalent of a magnum if you need some precision shots quick and fast rather than being a piddly piece of polymer you only use in the early game.

IMO,

The pistol should be as powerful as the seen in Halo.

(No, I haven't seen the 15 minute footage).

I found it odd how the new Shadow Warrior had a pistol added since that weapon was never in the original.

With those weapon mods it is possible that you start with the pistol as a typical weak beginning weapon, and then later you can upgrade it to something like a Desert Eagle.

There are teleports in the MP Alpha. Both static and deployable (like the personal teleporter in UT).

So much hate for the pistol!

I really think it was just a difficulty thing. One more thing to make Nightmare that much more frustrating.

Those 30 seconds getting to the shotgun where intense! :D

NuDoom's pistol ...is not what I was expecting. Its like they took Doom 3's pistol and mated it with a Cylon. Its just goofy looking. Hopefully the firing animations are good.

Considering Nightmare mode wasn't even in the original release at first if I remember right, I doubt it was intended for Nightmare. Just a filler weapon to defend yourself with besides your fists once you start the game, and then the Chaingun is a straight-up upgrade.

My guess is that it'll probably be a better version of Doom 3's pistol; good for accuracy if you can nail headshots, worthless otherwise. But who knows, maybe weapon upgrades will turn it into a powerhouse in its own right?

I am too young to remember, but I swear the first time I played Doom, it had Nightmare, then again that would have been in like 2000, so I'm a bit late to the party. Now I'm curious, was this the case? I can't find anything online about the original Doom not having that difficulty level.

As for the pistol, I agree with the comments regarding the upgrades and alt-fires. After all the shotgun looked kinda trash as well, but the alt-fire was melting face.

In the first few versions, it didn't have nightmare. A complaint was sent to John Romero about how UV was 'too easy', so he made the Nightmare mode.

one carefully placed pistol shot turns a Possessed’s head into a messy soup of brains and blood.
