Fonze Posted July 5, 2015 Warrens was my favorite in Doom 1 just because the concept was awesome the first time I discovered it (I went from confused and pissed to running scared from a cyberdemon... Good times) Doom 2 had tricks and traps, which always stood out to me, but I really like map 15 which I cant remember it's name, suburbs, and the pit. Chasm used to piss me off (and it has one of my least favorite songs) but I like it now, too. TNT was my favorite iWad, with wormhole, metal (with its heretic reference), Mount Pain, river Styx, quarry, pharoah, carribean, I think it was nukage processing that had the giant reactors, I always remember those. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

129thVisplane Posted July 5, 2015 My personal map preferences strongly rely on visuals and audio over gameplay; if a map looks nice and has cool music but the gameplay is mostly shit, I can stomach it. That said, my probably most favorite maps are E2M2 and E2M7 from Doom 1; MAP02, MAP09 and MAP14 from Doom 2; and MAP04 from TNT (to be honest I haven't played both of the Final Dooms too much and don't remember the levels apart from the few first ones). On the other hand, while I find most of the other maps (not listed above) at least somewhat enjoyable, I don't like MAP11 and MAP15 of Doom 2 too much, MAP13 is a huge confusing dark mess, and MAP03 is just an atrocious pile of brown; only thing I like about MAP03 is telefragging zombies on the rocket launcher pillar. I'm also not a fan of the whole 4th episode of Ultimate Doom, too much brown. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Jaws In Space Posted July 5, 2015 No, I really just didn't find the map to be fun at all. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Budoka Posted July 6, 2015 I like Warrens too, both for the gimmick and the various challenges. Also Unholy Cathedral and Mt.Erebus, which from a pistol start turn into fascinatingly intricate, chaotic puzzles. Perfect Hatred, now that's what I call intensity. Unto the Cruel isn't too tough but it's a great conclusion all the same. I wish the other boss levels had this much to offer. I also like every McGee level, if only for the art. Well, his short and brutal gameplay doesn't hurt anything. Really, everything he does works quite well. Let's add The Living End for both the setting and the whole "running the gauntlet" aspect. Both secret maps from Evilution are among my all-time favorites (Dario Casali is a genius). Realm stands out to me for reasons I'm not entirely sure of, Speed offers a lot of variety with very little space, and Go 2 It was a truly satisfying experience save for that hazardous final brawl in font of the exit door. And lest we forget, every single map in No Rest For the Living is amazing. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

drygnfyre Posted April 30, 2017 I'm not really a fan of most of the "boss battle" levels. E1M8 is alright, because there's at least a bit of build-up to the barons fight. But both E2M8 and E3M8, there's nothing interesting, really. You just walk a tiny bit and start fighting the boss. Granted, E2M8 does have some neat visual design, especially the strung-up barons, it's a subtle way of letting you know that there is a bigger enemy you've yet to see. But E3M8, I dunno, I just really dislike the map. I do like E4M8 quite a bit, though. Like E1M8, there's at least some effort put into it, there's a little bit to do before you fight the boss. However, I really dislike the choice of music for this map, so I usually use the code to change it. Â Doom 2, not really a fan of some of the later levels. Don't really like Map 21, or Map 23. Some of the other maps that rely more on gimmicks, like Tricks & Traps, also aren't among my favorite. I find these maps focus less on straightforward action, which is really the entire point of the games. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

savagegrant Posted April 30, 2017 E1M7 is my favourite and MAP08 is easily my least favourite, in fact when I'm doing a Doom II run I get to that level and I usually lose interest in continuing it's *that* bad. :P 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
ShoDemo Posted April 30, 2017 My favourites from Doom are: E1M1 E1M4 E1M9 E2M2 (used to hate it due to low ammo on the start, but once I replayed Doom it felt nice) E3M1 E3M2 E3M6 E3M9 (it is fun what they did with E3M1)  My least favourites are: E3M5 (I spent a lot of time in that map searching for the right teleporter) E3M7 (I find it the most boring map I have ever played)  From Doom 2 my favourites are: Map12 Map13 Map15 (I love the city levels as you can see) Map30 (a nice conclusion) Map31 (didn't expect a Wolfenstein level in Doom 2) Map32 (secret inside the secret)  My least favourite is: Map23 (I hate this map, mainly due to the Pain Elementals, that have to be killed immediately)  1 Quote Share this post Link to post

42PercentHealth Posted May 1, 2017 I didn't like Doom 1 much, but Ultimate Doom had a couple of good maps in it. Since I've only played it once, I can't really remember all the names or slots. All I know is that Unholy Cathedral is a stellar example of how NOT to make a Doom map! Â Doom 2's maps 14 and 29 definitely are my favorites. The Chasm is the worst Doom 2 map, and should have been reserved for a terry WAD. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

The first and only time I played Unholy Cathedral, I killed most or all of the enemies in 15 or 20 minutes. Then I spent the next hour taking teleporter after disorienting teleporter trying to figure out how to exit the map. Granted, navigation has never been my forte. Still, this is not my idea of a good time. A map (IMO) should be easily navigable, and I think teleporters tend to detract from this goal.  The Chasm does not even feel like Doom -- no fast-paced shooter action, just careful maneuvering of ledges. Not to mention, the stupidest, most useless invulnerability secret in Doom history. A small bit of tweaking, and you have a terry map. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

The former because it is a bit disorienting, always being teleported around, and the latter because it has so many rooms and doors and just slogs on and on. Granted, I suppose that was the point of these two maps, to fatigue the player a bit, get them confused. But I agree that Unholy Cathedral probably could have been designed a bit better. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
