As you might know, Doom / Doom 2 store their graphics as "patches." Wall textures are then built up out of these patches, sometimes as just one big patch, other times by taking a bunch of small patches and laying them next to / on top of one another to form the final texture. Turns out that much of the infamous "refresh daemon" wait when loading up Doom was due to the engine building up the textures out of patches and storing them in memory. It made me wonder what would
