20 Years of PlayStation Doom.

I swear this has been covered somewhere. I remember reading that it was taken from a voice sample related to an earlier game. Like a guy shouting something. I think there's a YouTube video where someone sped up the sample so you can hear exactly what is being said.

I'm still theorizing, given the ping pong sfx in the background, that Danny Lewis won the office ping pong tourney. But maybe Aubrey can enlighten us if/when he sees this ;)

I have to say it is something that the mystery was better left in though. Ever since figuring out what it actually says, that's all I can hear when I play the game or that music track, whereas before it sounded like the much more mournful "Tell me why?!" which I could maybe see demons singing - like, why is Doomguy still going against all odds, or why are the demons punished eternally, or why do humans smell so bad? ;)

LMAO.

It probably really is a recording of a ping pong match, a hellish one no doubt. I'm curious though, I wonder if any other of Aubrey's ambient tracks have hidden things like this in them?

Aubrey stated in this old interview that it was a sound taken from a previous game.

That said, I could swear that I've heard that same "ping-pong" sound effect used in music on The X-Files.

Heh-heh heh-heh heh-heh heh-heh.... *evil grin*

*wonders if he should reveal more PSX Doom secrets...*

Wouldn't surprise me, even in the X-Files revival there were scenes where I recognized PSX Doom sounds. A lot of them came from royalty free CD's, so you're going to hear them in various places. I think the one I've heard the most is the "You don't have the key to open this door" sound.

In regards to X-Files and Aubrey Hodges, I am certain I heard Hell's Churn (Command Control) in one of the episodes, or in the very least, a very similar sounding score. I'll have to try and find that episode! Maybe a fellow X-Files fan can help me remember.

Ah found it! Okay, it's not the exact song. But it sounds similar. I don't know what the sound is called, but it's that whining siren sound (?) It appears throughout the X-Files episode. Season 3, episode 23 "Wetwired". If you watch the show, you'll know it when you hear it.

Yeah, I made a similar observation about a Final Doom track here.

That same effect is also used in this track from Duke Nukem: Total Meltdown.

One of my favorite tracks from Aubrey Hodges is Bleep Spawn from Doom 64's Alpha Quadrant. Have you ever felt alone? Wonder what it might feel like to all alone in a haunted space station? This track will make you feel that way. It's very effective.

I agree, I love it too. I always sleep listening to this one.

The Arch-vile would have been goddamn terrifying, holy crap. The idle sounds alone would have scared the hell out of me back then.

Use the link to go get the Arch Vile sounds...finally.

Thanks for your patience too. As I am working on tons of projects currently and had to squeeze this in whenever I had free time.

Nice! Would've been cool If the Archvile was In the game (or even In DOOM 64), but we can only dream.

I would love to see a Doom 64 version of the Archvile. I can only imagine what that would have looked like.

I suppose this was the Archvile, which was going to be female.

Conceptually, it became the Mother Demon, who is female and in the story is said to have resurrected all the demons you killed and given them a stronger form.

Huh, didn't know that. Maybe the Archvile was behind It all, or this was the Mother Demon as you said.

Either the Romero sound clip would have stayed where it was, or the Romero sprite would have been replaced with someone else along with the sound.

I would have liked that creature as a Fem-vile in various maps, in addition to the Motherdemon final boss we got.

Been out of the loop for a bit with my other projects involving the XRGB-mini. Just wanted to post a special thanks to Aubrey for coming out with the 20th anniversary edition of the PS Doom soundtrack. I bought it the other day after discovering the listing on his web site. Of course I take some special credit in harassing him into revisiting those tracks ;-)

Also wanted to say that I went ahead and put up my own web page of the interview I did back in 2003 with the level designers of Doom 64:

http://www.firebrandx.com/doom64interview.html

Doom Depot being down once again finally gave me the determination to keep the interview safe and sound on my own web site. Thankfully I still had the transcript from a previous web image archive.

Well I would imagine that they use sound and sample libraries.

I made the mistake of thinking Aubrey was paying homage to X-Files, but it turns out the sound libraries are widely available and called "A Poke in the Ear" or something to that effect. I bought a copy of the CD of those same sounds some time ago. I recall noticing that Trent Reznor also made extensive use of the same library.

Edit: Here's the CD I bought of those sound libraries:
