RaikohZX Posted January 9, 2016 My assumption is that it's more Doom PSX/64 and Quake 1 than Doom 1/2. The ambient tones, the gore, the hellish environments are all gonna be spooky, but once an Imp comes out from around the corner, we're not in for the SO SPOOKY JUMPSCARE monster closet abuse of Doom 3 but a full-on fight as the industrial grunge and beat kicks in and we move to blow away whatever's in our path. Since these are potentially big fights, swapping between the two atmospheres works best rather than sticking to constantly-playing metal music or nothing but spooks the whole time. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Tetzlaff Posted January 10, 2016 The more they go into the juvenile metalhead cartoony direction, the less scary it will be. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
DooM_RO Posted January 10, 2016 I'm not sure if it will be scary but it sure will be grotesque. Remember that concept art and screenshot with the huge demon skull? Turns out it's a titan (maybe the race to which the Icon of Sin belongs?) and you have to enter its decomposing body and explore its bowels...If that's not Doom I don't know what is. http://www.gameinformer.com/themes/blogs/generic/post.aspx?WeblogApp=features&y=2016&m=01&d=08&WeblogPostName=doom-10-badass-moments-from-our-hands-on-session&GroupKeys= 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

That's probably more duke's humor though, if that happened in an id game it would defiantly break the tension and immersion for me lol. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
HavoX Posted January 10, 2016 Scary? SCARY?! Doom (2016) might be too scary enough for kids to give them nightmares... but it won't be as scary as Doom 3. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

If anything, the original game's art was far more "Juvenile Metalhead Cartoony" than this game is. Take this: Compared to this: For me, the original DOOM's horror never really came from the designs and visuals. It came from the sense of being overwhelmed. Too many big, deadly demons surrounding you to count, low on health and ammo, and you know they're hunting you down even while you search the area for supplies. I feel the new DOOM is going to be that x10. Especially now with the atmosphere the game has. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

They try to rehash the style of the old 1990s Doom. I am a little bit concerned that they try too hard. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Deleted_Account Posted January 10, 2016 In Doom 3 a lot of you guys said they're generic space aliens! In Doom 2016, they're too cartoony! Well, the original Doom was cartoony in it's design. Tomatoes that spit purple and bleed blue, devils with rocket launchers, chainsaws and shotguns in space. That never took away from it, so why should that be the case today? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Koko Ricky Posted January 10, 2016 Cartoony can look a bit weird when translated from big fat pixels to high-detail 3D models, but I think the overall design is way more attractive and interesting than Doom 3's. I'm even starting to like the new cyberdemon. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I feel like people remember the original being bigger than it really was. Proportionally, he's pretty good, and I like the idea of him being this big hulking beast. I'm probably the only person here that thinks the horns look incredible. They're massive, regal looking, and kind of intimidating. I am really excited to see if that big spike on his right wrist plays into close combat at all. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Koko Ricky Posted January 10, 2016 I mean, are they original Doom 2 monsters perfect in their design? The pain elemental looks kinda goofy. It didn't really look truly awesome until Doom 64. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
archvile82 Posted January 10, 2016 I like the cyberdemon design too, I think when we see him in action we will all appreciate the design a lot more. I really hope they bring back the spider mastermind and the Arachnotron's, didn't like doom 3 giant spider women much. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I completely agree and appreciate how Doom 2016 is going back to the roots for design. How can anyone bash the new monsters for being "cartoony" when the original Doom looked like a cartoon also? Albeit a dark and gritty one, but still! It was very colorful at times and didn't always take itself too seriously. Doom has always been a blend of intense action, horror and even comedy and Doom 2016 seems to be tapping into all those qualities quite nicely. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Also, the trite (I think it's called), whatever the fuck that thing is with the upside down face, is the single lamest design in Doom history. It also had the worst death animation, which was literally the model disappearing and being replaced by a shitty sploot sprite animation. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Mainly because it was based off that scene from John Carpenter's 1982 classic "The Thing." The scene where the disembodied head of the creature grows legs and tries to escape: I think it's pretty badass and scary personally. But The Thing is my favorite movie of all time so that could be why. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Zemini Posted January 11, 2016 Only good designs that came from D3 imo are the Hell knights (and it's hunter killer variants), Vulgur, Bruiser and maybe the Guardian. Rest of them I felt to be mediocre at best. Cacodemon was awful however. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

RUSH Posted January 12, 2016 GoatLord said:The trite would have kicked major ass if it looked like THAT. I love that movie! True enough. I think on paper the concept of having freaky giant spider eyes under the upside down human mouth is both grotesque and genuinely frightening. Although the way id presented the Trite in game doesn't quite live up to the intimidating horror I imagined in my head. They should have made them faster with even larger eyes and creepy hairy bodies. Would have made them a lot more vile looking than the sort of Pillsbury dough boy skin we got: I still think the design is solid but the skin and overall appearance of the eyes is just sort of bland and not NEARLY as scary as it could have been. That being said, I wouldn't want to see this fucker in my house o.o 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Zemini Posted January 12, 2016 The problem with the D3 trite is that it was too small and too fast to really tell what it looked like. For all I knew, I was just killing a large swarm of spiders. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Koko Ricky Posted January 12, 2016 Most of Doom 3's monsters looked too much like this + that with no real transition. Like the trite is spider + human face. The incorporation of the two looks too stark, you don't get the sense that it's a fucked-up mix of the two. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Tetzlaff Posted January 12, 2016 I think the Trite is a great design. I made myself a little soundmod where the Trite whispers in a strange, arcane sounding language, as if the human head had that transformed into the spider still has some conscience left. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
