There you have it. It is the original, later severed, head. I'm sure he means "id" where he said "It" at the start if the second sentence...

Btw, story-wise for a Doom III, it doesn't seem in the realm of total unrealisticness (since we're already off on on an alternate reality path), that some ancient american ruins might have been the setting, seeing as how the artists at id were at the time, unsuccessfully trying to fit a mesoamerican theme on the Quake engine. It might have been a better fit for the Doom engine... Find some ancient gates that have opened and shut them down, stopping the renewed demon dribble unto earth?

I'd presume a 1995 Doom 3 would likely have been a quick cash-in, maybe re-use some of the Hexen/Raven shit for something a bit more scripted, maybe more in-line with the original Doom Bible vision. Not 1:1 but making it more compatible with what had been established in Doom 1/2. Probably slopes and a 3D floors hack to compete with Duke 3D, I dunno -- Carmack doesn't seem the type to sling in something hackish, don't know if that was his ethos 20 years ago. Looking at Doom's peers of the (roughly) similar era versus id's tendency to push the envelope in some way, basic 3D models a la Descent may have made an appearance for monsters (redesigned to suit? Possibly using textures derived from photos of the original models, but not as slavish to them as you'd expect - think somewhere closer to Quake's angular monsters than the model packs for Risen 3D et al) but otherwise sprites all the way.

Given the Doom Bible stuff, new weapon(s) would definitely include the unmaker. Not sure about beasties, but something akin to a divebombing airborne Cyberdemon would've been both nightmarish and neat as fuck.

Doom, Duke, and Quake are the epic trilogy of the 90s for me. So as has been covered, I think a Doom made in 95 or 96 would ideally have some of those innovations, in the Doom style.

In a perfect world, we'd have had two big id teams making twice as many id games as we have in our current reality. :D (Granted we had Raven)

Maybe just more variation in textures and themes to each area, higher detail, more ways to interact with the level, more clever stuff, smarter enemies, more weapons and power ups, etc.

And jumping of course.
