I use my PDA for calendar beeping, alarms, and more (has more advanced stuff compared to cell phones today, surprisingly). Also wifi is free compared to the phone I use. For older and text base browsers, they usually just end up ignoring tags they know nothing about and CSS elements they also know nothing about. Sadly, dial-up is not a thing of the past, in very rural areas out in the middle of nowhere you either have dial-up or overpriced satellite. Too far from the phone company to get DSL, and in some areas cable can be as high as 200 USDa month (or a few thousand dollar installation fee) if it is available at all. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
GreyGhost Posted October 15, 2015 If it's done without breaking the current desktop layout - that's fine with me. Last thing I'd want to see is yet another pillarboxed "mobile compatible" compromise. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

From my understanding there's very few areas that are still on dialup, I naively imagined America would be well ahead of us on that front for some reason. As much as I value the internet, that's certainly too expensive! GreyGhost said:If it's done without breaking the current desktop layout - that's fine with me. Cupboard Posted October 15, 2015 Oh you smart phone users. You will continue to be victimized for some time to come. A treasure trove of the internet's useful information will never suitably accommodate your platform of choice. Let's hope it's easy for people to post user messages on DW via their smart phones. I'm all for that, don't get me wrong. But those phone users will never, ever be the dominant platform of choice for an eminently important source of Doom news and community activity. Phone users will have to to put up with an inconvenient venue of information dissemination for a long time to come. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
40oz Posted October 15, 2015 I use my phone to browse this site a lot. I like the text size and formatting of the site for reading but I find posting replies to be a drag, that at times ill sometimes write my posts in the form of an SMS text message, then cut and paste it here. A lot of the URL links like "post reply" and going to the user profile or different page numbers of a thread are very small and really tough for navigation too. I would love it if I could just swipe my thumb across to go to the next page of a thread instead of scrolling all the way to the top or bottom to get to the page numbers. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Someone who gets it! :) There's a difference between the site being 'usable' and being 'optimized'. It turns it from unpleasant to very pleasant to browse the site. 40oz said:I use my phone to browse this site a lot. That feature sounds amazing, but it would certainly require Javascript, which so many here seem ever so opposed to. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Tango Posted October 16, 2015 I would definitely be in favor of this :D I use the latest firefox browser on my android phone and it's usually a pretty painful experience to navigate the forums, zooming and clicking on tiny links with comparably large thumbs. so, in short, I don't use a mobile phone ever to browse the forums so I'm voting no because screw you, mobile users 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Mithran Denizen Posted October 16, 2015 At this point, the majority of my Doomworld consumption is through a mobile browser. I find I have plenty of time to read while waiting for people in restaurants, or while sitting on the train, in between appointments, etc. Free time at home with a real computer is comparatively scarce, so I'd rather spend it actually playing Doom when I can. Anyway, the desktop site is usable enough on my phone (much better than some 'mobile-friendly' forums, in fact), but I'd love to see it improved and/or streamlined somewhat. Navigating threads and pages in particular can be kind of a pain when you have to zoom WAY in on the links / buttons to click them properly. That, and misclicking on the logout button from the post thread/reply page is an annoyingly common occurance for me with a touchscreen. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Dragonfly Posted October 29, 2015 So it seems in large that the community want this feature, or at least don't mind if it's implemented! Who's the best person to speak to about implementing this, I assume Linguica? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Yes, but first you must sacrifice a Doom monster plushy (the preferred one being a Cacodemon). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
