Doom2000 id's Next Project?

Yeah right, as if. There has been a lot of speculation about the possibility of id Software's next game being a long-awaited third installment in the Doom series. Now, naturally, there is nothing saying that id will make a Doom2000, but here are some reasons why it not be quite as far-fetched as one would imagine.

  • id Software owns the www.doom2000.com domain name
  • Doom references can be found within Quake 2 (a secret room with the Doom logo, and the return of the BFG) and Quake 3 Arena (the Doomguy character, obviously), meaning that Doom is still on the minds of id
  • Kenneth Scott, recently acquired artist for id Software, has been described as a "huge Doom freak" and got one of his first breaks creating monster sprites for the commercial Doom 2 TC HACX
  • Mentions of a possible Doom2000 at QuakeCon resulted in wild cheers and clapping from the assembled audience
  • Xatrix Entertainment, makers of games such as Kingpin and Redneck Rampage, have been rumored to be creating a sequel to id's classic game Wolfenstein 3D -- instead of a sequel to Doom, an obviously "hotter property" -- suggesting a reason why they were denied the privelege of creating a new Doom game
  • Tim Willits, lead level designer at id Software, made the "Raven" series of Doom 2 levels and contributed to the Doom 2 Master Levels and episode 4 of The Ultimate Doom, but has never actually gotten to help create a Doom game
There's some stuff to chew on for a while...

it's a pointless discussion because id aren't going to make doom2000 .. but i think if they did it couldnt be as good as the others so all that would happen would be the community would be flooded by llamas.

I don't think they have had time to do this project in time. Q3 has been in the front seat for some time. The only way is if they hired someone to do it, like Raven or something, and I can't believe that a project like that would be unheard of. -Marc -Fanatic's Abode

Anybody who's been watching CNN or any major news shows today knows that the cops found some home movies made by the Columbine killers. They now have proof that those two were completely and utterly nutso. Unfortunately, all the news shows made a point to quote one of their comments on the upcoming attack: Quoth the psycho, "This is gonna be like ----- Doom." So we know that they got something out of Doom, something they weren't supposed to get. And now we can expect a fresh torrent of bad vibes to come down on the game industry, particularly our beloved classic. More to the point, if id were to even think about making Doom 200, or anything even related to Doom, it'll be political (and economic) suicide for them.

When have any of Id's games been 'politically correct'? Never. They are all graphically violent and loads of fun. ;-) It's a non-issue. If you follow all the rumors, the whole rumor was that Xatrix does Wolf2000 and Id does Doom2000. It is a fact that Xatrix is now working on W2K. Since that half is true...I think it's safe to say we'll get Doom 2K. ;-) Rothrin http://www.siscom.net/~rothrin

Although it kinda goes against the usual way of making a game for id, they could make doom2k relatively quickly, theyve a great engine sitting there (q3a) now all they need is to sit down, make the models maps, art and sounds -it'd give Carmack some time to go off and do that research he was talking about in one of his last .plan files, either that or we might be getting err Doom2001 or Doom2002 ;)

I say that DOOM2000 could happen. They could have ALREADY been working on it. <.< >.> I say they secretly worked on DOOM2K while their cover game was Q3A (BTW, I have it and it ROCKS BIG TIME! :). But... that won't happen. But, hey. It could happen. :)

Carmack has stated that if Q3A sells big-time, id might continue with the multiplayer-only format for their next release. If Q3A doesn't sell a lot of units, then id's next game will be single-player... and Doom2000 has a good chance of being that game. So if you want to see Doom2000, DON'T BUY Q3A!!! :-) DocBob Realm of Chaos

I really hope that Id makes a new Doom-game, not necessarily "D2K" :), maybe using the Q3 engine. The bad thing is that it can´t be a success (it will sell alot but not be such a good game as the original) because all fans will have to high expectations and will be dissappointed when it isn´t as good as they thought. But i would still like to see it happen. -- Karl-Oscar Olson karlo@mbox302.swipnet.se

As though the community weren't -already- flooded with llamas. I would imagine that the older Doom community would probably simply be an elite island in the huge ocean of Neo-Doomers... to be an old-schooler would be a position that commanded respect, and we would all be hailed as "Ye Faithful" I think its likely that Doom2000 will come to be. Carmack has said that there's strong pressure in the id offices for it. We'll see.

The idea sounds interesting. The only question I have on my mind is, will it have the same magic like the old one had, scince the market is saturated with shooters? The 1992 Doom 'bible' had alot of intersting ideas in it that I'd like to see implemented, and I hope to see them in the possible upcoming Doom game. ----- balanco@deja.com

I just want to say that Id better bring Doom2000 to the public. I don't care what all those other people think, but I am a Doom fanatic (as well as a Heretic fanatic), and I would just love it if some of my favorite things brighten up the new millenium! I bet all the money in the world that D2K would rock and slap Q3A's behind! Laters y'all dudes and hoodlums!

I don't think it is very likely that Doom2000 would be political or economic suicide for id. Economic is -certainly- very unlikely - I can only see sales rise because of a strong media reminder of the Columbine shootings. Keep in mind that nothing is better for sales than tragedy (how many Franklin Mint JFK Jr. plate sets or cheesy biographies have we seen come out since his death?). As for political suicide, making a Doom2000 game is really no different than making Quake 3: both are violent, both are the same sort of game. Furthermore, id sit outside of politics. I can't see any reason why Columbine should have anything to do with id releasing Doom2000, unless they chicken out against common sense.

Doom 2000 would definitly be cool. Just some things though. GET THE MUSIC MADE FROM BOBBY PRINCE! Now, I know that the song Rob Zombie did for Q2 was cool. I listen to it while I drive. But in my opinion, Mr. Prince is the only one with the true aspect of the music needed for a game such as Doom. P.S. Id-Make it easy to edit levels!

As good a Q3A is, I still miss the good'ole 1 player games (and I don't mean deathmatch with bots...) Going thru Quake 1 fragging those fiends and those shamblers was loads of fun. Can you imagine Doom on the Q3 engine? Damn, that'd be fantastic. The grunts and sargeant (and imps & all) could be a *lot* smarter with the bots routines they've already got. You could get packs of imps intelligently ganging up on you or sarges that would run for medi-packs if you didn't finish them off fast enough... And all that in stunningly beautiful architecture with dynamic lighting in full 3D! How can id *not* do Doom 2000?

great, now you've got me drooling all over again.. doom 2000.. ooooh.. i think by the time id finishes "Doom 2000" the columbine garbage will be long forgotten and the latest media trash will be in the front headlines.. so that's not too much of a deal to me. it probabally won't be named Doom 2000, maybe Doom III? bleah, uncreative.. oh well if they were to make it, i say they should hire some japanese artists to do some nice monster designs, as well as all the old freaks we know and love :)
