Guest SteveDuff Posted December 18, 1999 I first played KNEE DEEP on my Mac in '95 to hone my skills for Doom2 (I kept getting wiped on Level 3). The KNEE DEEP levels knocked me out with their architecture and music, and have remained fascinating for years because the designs were so clever. There were so many devious little secrets, so many different pathways to your goals. There were lots of passageways and monsters could come at you from several directions at once. But probably the coolest thing was the feeling of being in an installation. The architecture was realistic enough to fire your imagination, without being *too* realistic. Couple that with the extremely creepy music in M3 and M5 and it was one hell of an experience. I guess my favorite levels as a player were M3, M6 and M7. M3 was the first level to really bring the hammer down and it had some of the coolest loop-around secret passageways ever. M6 was a brilliant indoor-outdoor design with some really complex architecture near the end and great fighting, plus you gotta love Romero's use of Fullbright. M7 was another incredible level, one of the best ever. Damn, it was fun riding that up-down pillar on the bridge and jumping into the slime to find the secrets. Of course we can't forget M8 because fighting those Barons for the first time scared the hell outta me and resulted in many, many deaths. I still play KNEE DEEP today because it's Romero's premier work of genius. The only thing that ever really came close was Sean Birkel's FAVA BEANS and the Amiga game Breathless (the best Amiga Doom clone, complete with look up-down and a killer fog effect). I suspect I'll be playing all three for a while to come. 0 Share this post Link to post

Guest SLAYER Posted December 18, 1999 I remember playing the shareware version of doom I got in a five CD pack, it had been out for a while already. The levels are great! The architecture, music...everything about it. I really remember when I got home from somewhere one day, my younger brother had got up to the last level and told me about how hard and unfair the Barons were, so I got on, and kicked their asses with the rocket launcher. I always thought that was funny. My younger brother was scared of the barons the first time he walked up from the lift, and he was only using the chaingun (BTW, we didn't use strafe until after a while of playing). I think episode 1 and 2 are the best Doom levels ever, whenever I get bored of Doom I just play episode 1, which always gets me back into Dooming again. 0 Share this post Link to post
Guest Anonymous User Posted December 18, 1999 Ok, the first FPS i ever played was Wolf3d, and although it was fairly cool, i just didn't find it fun for long. I played Doom Shareware on my friend's computer since i only had a 286 then, and i played for hours on end, the atmosthere was completely different, the levels were so much fun. 0 Share this post Link to post
AdamW Posted December 18, 1999 well, i think i'm kinda qualified to comment here, having spent about 30 hours playing the damn episode for the compet-n record :). <quick plug: http://doom.alpha.rulez.org/incoming/ep1-0529.zip - ep1 in 5:29, 2 secs faster than DDQ...>. I think one of the points that has generally been overlooked is that ep1 is probably the _hardest_ episode. since id had fewer monsters to work with in ep1, there are far more sergeants and troopers. since those are the only two enemies who can hit you without you being able to dodge, once you've learnt some elementary strafing skills, they're by far the hardest ones. e1m3 particularly is flat out hard to survive, as can e1m5 be. also, the other points apply even on the 500th attempt at getting past bloody e1m5...the design is beautiful and effective, ep1 looks a damn sight better than any of the other dooms. the other two episodes oftne lapsed into a fairly regular corridor/rooms design...ep1 is very much less like this. e1m7 is a great example - it's very obviously been planned out as a building before the gameplay elements have even been considered, and it shows. ep1 rocks. :) 0 Share this post Link to post
Guest Anonymous User Posted December 19, 1999 It was my first gaming experience on an old 486/33/4mb. But it was the best game i ever played in 1993. I still think walking down the hallway in e1m8 to the barons was always terrifiying even after time because you knew what to expect. doom on, gamers! 0 Share this post Link to post
