Guest Dan Posted December 19, 1999 Hold on here, I thought Brazil had already banned these games. I mean, we knew long ago that games like Grand Theft Auto were Banned in Brazil. This should be old news. Besides, all this crap about entertainment media (movies, games, music, etc...) is just that, crap. Hell, I heard that they banned any reference to shirukens (ninja throwing stars) in Great Britain, since some nut saw too many bad kung-fu movies, got a crapload of throwing stars, and just started huckin' them at people. Ouch. They had to make a special British patch for 3D Realm's "Shadow Warrior" to change the shiruken weapon into darts. What the hell gives? It's STUPID!!!! Pardon the rant, just testing out the brand new P3 500 w/ DSL connection, and I'm feelin' kinda giddy. (This is SOOO much better than a P 100 w/ 28.8 analog modem!) ~DP 0 Share this post Link to post
Guest Anonymous User Posted December 19, 1999 Maybe Duke3D is indeed representing the perverted attitude of North America. Just look at how much effort the designers spent to cover the nipples of the girls in the game. But they had no problems with the guts spreading around if you shoot them, leaving a big pool of blood. Most people in Europe can hardly understand that. 0 Share this post Link to post

SailorScout Posted December 19, 1999 This isn't exactly about the banning of games, but more about guns and the US. There is one simple reason why, besides the Constitution, people have guns.
Hunting.

The United States is several thousand miles across, with a large amount of forested area still remaining. This is in contrast to Britain (an island), or Europe or any other areas. For anyone who lives in a state with a lot of forest, hunting is a neccessary thing.

Do you have any idea how many people get into accidents because of hitting deer? A lot.. almost as many as drunk drivers get into. I'd rather have some guys running around blowing apart an animal then doing the same to real people. I DO think on the same subject that anyone who hunts should eat what they kill.. it's a waste to not do so. As for 'well if you're in the city you don't need guns..', think about that comment. The bad guys would just go out into the country and claim they're using them for hunting, then take them into the city. So, you can't really restrict them since that would put innocent people at risk. Btw, you will notice that you can't get handguns until you're 21, whereas rifles and larger (less concealable) weapons are ok at 18. This is for the reasons explained above.

Anyway, that is why foreigners should stop comparing the US to the rest of the world in that regard. Compare our public school systems or something which can be changed for the better instead. ;) 0 Share this post Link to post
Guest Karlo Posted December 19, 1999 Good point, SailorScout. In Sweden there are more restrictive gun laws, you need a license to own a weapon and you must be at least 18. You can hunt when you are younger (like me, i´m 16) but you are not allowed to own a gun. This system works pretty well, but as it makes it harder for criminals to get weapons, they have to break in to steal weapons (often from military storages) which isn´t that good... 0 Share this post Link to post

What's going to happen if some nut decides to run around throwing darts? Or how 'bout if someone decides to go to a sporting goods store, purchases a bow and arrow set, and uses that instead (several years ago, there was a news story where somebody shot a man he was PO'ed with with an arrow), will they ban that from games. Will they also ban Robin Hood? Yes, it is very stupid. >>>>>>>>>> What the hell gives? It's STUPID!!!! Guest ACiDeaTH[cx] Posted December 20, 1999 I'm brazillian, and I can say for sure that this won't improve the situation here - the violence here have nothing to do with computers, except when someone is arrested becuz of illegal hardware traffic :P the thing is so expensive, that only those nerds with mental problems that earn everything from their parents (even when they're over 18) have access to it. In that specific case the problem was with the society - that dude just won't fit in it. So he kills to get attention and say that he played a game just to try to ease the punishment. Yeah, they really believe that a damn game is a stronger influence than drugs and bang, we gamers get affected. I play that kind of game for more that 4 years now, and I don't have any problems. Brazil is itself a social problem, and those politicians can't solve it. So blame the games, make the public feel safe and happy for a moment, and that's it. 0 Share this post Link to post
Guest Leph Posted December 22, 1999 Ruth said "Those things should be: Anything Satanic, Pornographic or Anti GOD/COUNTRY/FAMILY (as in what should be banned)". First of all, the satanic and god ones: that is flagrantly against the constitiution and an insult to any non-religiou person, and besides that would include Doom! I'm not going to debate whether pornography (which, despite what many people state, includes many novels. Anything erotic, in fact) should be banned, since it would serve no purpouse. SailorScout, the ages you mention are different in every state. In Michigan, where I live, if you're at least 12 years of age and have not commited a felony, you can buy any gun (not counting level three ones, of course. That's federal). 0 Share this post Link to post
