Linguica's Ten Must-Have WADs

I don't disagree with Tei Tenga being among the top ten at all. In fact it really deserves the place more than others in the list (it's inmersive story kept me playing it more than any megawad). But Both Aliens and Batman deserve their place as well. Who says that playability is worse? It's just different because it pretends to be that way! Besides, both projects have more original work than any wads available. Do you really think many TC's choose to use the same DOOM monsters or use ripped off sprites because they prefer that than having their own? They do that because they cannot bare the amount of time it takes to make them. NEW graphics are VERY rare in DOOM projects. All I wish to get to is that I find very unfair that you critisize those who work the most, when we should encourage them instead. Aliens and Batman have features in them that don't even exist in any other wads in the world, and that's why I think they were elected top 10.

Overall, it is tough to narrow it down to 10 entries(esp. with deathmatch wads included). And I completely agree that textures and especially sprites are MUCH harder to do than simple level editing. BatmanDoom is the MOST polished TC for Doom that there is. But, you're right, I am critical of large projects if they can't deliver. I guess I am a purist, but Batman, Hacx, and what I've seen of Doom2000 leave a lot to be desired as far as playability is concerned. I play Doom to have fun -- trying to figure out what's a door-texture or just simply trying to see where I'm going isn't fun. I know that others disagree, and that's fine, but I'd rather play Darkening for the 20th time than Chexquest one. Also, if you are the same Anonymous user; _my_ choices are posted for all to see.... I'd like to see your must-have list. I don't want to see it to pick it apart; very much the opposite. If you know me at all, I'm not like that. thanks for listening.

Tei Tenga is weird...I mean is it supposed to be funny? Is it a parody a serious wad with some jokes...I can´t really tell...oh and the scripting is good but the game isn´t very "doomy" yet it uses the original monsters...except for that Minfit guy but he was easy...and gothicDm2 is good but part 1 is better...(I gotta create an account)

Yes, I know making a list of 10 is very hard, but at least a place or two must be left for TC's and these don't specifically rely on their playability. I do not consider myself to be a purist and I have always liked projects that try to be as different as possible from the original game. Of course, I agree with you that this is just a matter of preferences. About my top ten list... apparently I havn't really played as much as you have, but there are some projects that I have enjoyed very much. Operation Arctic Wolf was very fun (and most of the other Wolfendoom series). I also remember Osiris. Mordeth was a lot fun to play, and obviously Aliens and Batman. As you can see all are TC's and I wouldn't be a proper person to choose the top ten list, but I do feel the best TC's deserve a place.

Any of you ever play BF_Thud? I still remember that as being one of the best megawads I've ever played. It's still on cdrom.com but I can't remember the exact directory. The design of some of those levels was awesome.

You sound like a good level reviewer! Yesterday, I emailed Mr. Stine to consider putting up a Doomworld PUBLIC level review page; where anyone could submit and vote for what they thought were the best. Now this would obviously be very flawed, but I think it would also be very informative. One million Doomers can't be wrong! thanks for listening.

Yeah I remember bf_thud. It's like the classic megawad that no one talks about. ;) I played through all of it and enjoyed it greatly. The levels were a little plain in places but they were all fun. I remember some of my best DM experiences taking place in those levels.

Personally I don't see why so many people like Dwango5 and stuff...the maps are so shit-ugly that it really detracts from the gameplay/fun-factor...I'm not saying that DM wads have to look as nice as Gothic DM2...but damn, they shouldn't be THAT ugly...to me, it really isn't fun if it looks really bad. Plus the layout style of those types of maps never caught on with me.

Ok... and that's cool. Just so you know: most of the levels in Dwango5 are ugly... and suck. However, several (esp. level 1) are good. Level 1 is better than ANY of the gothicdm levels (sorry guys, but that's the truth). And 'yes', I'd rather play Overload than Dwango5; just because it looks nicer. I completely understand where you are coming from. You also, must realize that all of those wads were made before the best editors(and esp. node builders) were refined. One last thing: Dgdm4 is better than all of the above. ;)

Though I'm sure any 'fan' of my level DGDM4 would probably rather play Andrei Romanov's levels in GothicDM...they're practically just like it (though his look better...that I won't deny.) Well to each his own, I guess...I found some of the GothicDM 2 levels rather enjoyable, especially Dan Twomey's map11.

>Opulent: >"Personally, I look forward to Darkening2, Mordeth, and >especially Doom Millenium. I once played this cool game called >DOOM..". Especially Doom Millenium? *gasp* I'm offended! We here at the Darkening guarantee Ep2 will be 3X better then Ep1. (Well atleast I do...Finally a sequel better then the original). What makes Doom Millenium so special? "And I completely agree that textures and especially sprites are MUCH harder to do than simple level editing." GRR, this is an oversight. Sure, simple level editing is easy but we are talking about advanced layouts. If your primarily a level editor like dagger (or you) it's what comes easiest. As so you think it's easy. If your good at art...then it generally comes easy. These are two different things that take an immense amount of time regardless. Dagger said something to the effect of dw5/dweller2 sucking but I think some of those levels have a general aestetic that was definately good at the time and hold up today. I think he's judging yesterday's wads with today's standards. The knowledge was there before. You guys were talking about dgdm4. This wad, along with dw5 map1 are good but shouldn't be heralded as the greatest for one reason: They are not original. They possible may be the best flavor of this wad...but doesn't the credit deserve to go to Romanov and Petersen? I also find it wierd that Dagger likes GDM2 map 11 which is a DWANGO style map with modern detail. Ask dan himself he'd admit it. And finally...I may be bias, but I think that there were some good layouts/playability is GDM2. I just think detail takes over. But I do think the original was better play wise.... anthony

I haven't played too many Doom WADs, but Doom 2 X-treme and X-treme Gold are wonderfully fast, fun, and playable IMO... better than a few of Linguica's picks IMO, namely Requiem, Eternal and Aliens. Thanks for the list though... I've recently been getting back into games like Doom and Abuse, and I'll look into

What's wrong with Doom Millenium?? It could be the Megawad that replaces Requiem as the best, most-polished, most-saleable DOOM single-player add-on ever. I'm expecting every level to be as good or better than Dchronix(which is great in itself). Anyway, IMO grab SlaughterDM and see how dm levels should be made... And you're right, they never even dreamed of level like SLDM 4 years ago. Sometimes I think I like everyone's levels. Somebody quick make some crap, so I have something to stand on. =)

Well maybe I'll go redownload Dwango5...it's been so long, but something in it just didn't feel right...I guess I don't like levels so large and open. Hard to explain I suppose. And yes, I DO give Romanov the credit for my level...to a degree, because only the theme was copied...and I'm sure that his levels are better than mine. Anyone know what he's doing now?

Personally I'm not looking forward to Millennium myself...nothing about the screenshots impress me, but like I said before, to each his own. :)

My friend Captain Napalm will soon open his Doom Page and he will post his future levels. After like 3 years of Doom level building (as well as a little Duke3d, Blood, Quake, Halflife) he feels that he is finally at a point where he can release his levels! He builds good looking levels that are fun to play. Sadly he sort of sucks at DM levels. Sorry Cap!

This is strange because Doom Millennium is one of those projects that people either totally love or couldn't care less about. I have nothing against Doom Millennium - I just wanted to know what made it more desirable then the darkening. Though I highly doubt it would surpass requiem. Doom Millennium may have more consistent level design but I don't think it will break the pack. The only household level designer they have is Kurt Kesler who is doing only one level. Everbody else, except for (Paul Corfias) has yet to become fully realized. Ack...I better stop this before I turn it into some argument. Besides, it'd be better to win you over. And I certainly hope Millennium's levels are better then Dchronix...damn I haven't released a solo project in a while. That was only the third SP map I ever created. Doug, you availible for playtesting? neworderdatabase@hotmail.com

I definately agree with all of you guys out there who says things like DWANGO5 lvl 1 play awesome, but look like shit, which is exactly why I made dmsrv1. The first level I modeled a lot after DWANGO5/6 lvl 1 and it's turned out VERY well. It's probably one of the very best DM levels out there, and it looks pretty good, too :) It's also only a 5 level set. I didn't want to include 31 other levels that'll never be played and just take up more download time. Anyway, head on over to the download area here if yer interested in looking at it.

even though i tried a random aliens doom tc, and the first level played like killing 1 little bug in a big empty maze, i appreciate his effort. i used to play doom, and now i play quake. but doom has always owned quake in terms of fun to play and killing lots of sh*t all at once. that's why i love twilight warrior. i don't care much for big maps with puzzles and keys and other crap, and not much action. just send me a lot of monsters to kill with a decent theme to boot.
