I must say, I'm interested to see how this will turn out without John Romero...but I'm sure it will work, anyway. I hope it will work. I'm sure id aren't going to screw this up on us...but if they do, being id at least they'll do it in style. Someone suggested cutscenes...but I'm not so sure I like that idea...

It seems like theres just a lot of opposition to this game in the company. In any event, they should remake the first DooM, and make Hell a cooler looking place

i won't if it's possible to keep as much monsters as in original doom.... current games rarely handles more than 100 sprites at the same time...

It's about time. I hope it will turn out ok. However I'm not very optimist it will incorporate one of my favorite DooM Features, the ability to run it on my p100. -

Point 1 : Paul Steed a valuable team member got fired over this[br] Point 2 : He probably won't be the last[br] Point 3 : Things are ugly at id right now. There's probably going to be more fighting than game development going on there for the next little while. It may be some time before this game is completed. If it ever is.[br] Point 4 : John Carmack is a pragmatic individual. If it looks like this is going to tear the company apart, he will put a stop to it.[br] [br] It's a little early to get super excited over this. Maybe we should calm down and take a wait and see attitude.

A new Doom... shit ! That's good news ! I imagine how motivated the team will be to develop such a sequel. Much pressure, much pleasure ;-)

When id does make the game, I hope they make moderately low poly count monsters, otherwise there won't be nearly as many monsters allowed on screen, and that's what Doom is all about.

its a shame he got fired, but maybe he shouldnt have worked on a doom game. Have you seen his work? He's the essence of quake, as such. If he did a doom game, I dont know if he could adapt to provide the atmosphere we need.

Personally, I'd love to see Telefragged throw all their weight behind Doomworld, as PlanetDoom will be looming soon (and no doubt grab the bulk of PQ's audience) ... can Ling's site, run by a team of volunteers, fight of a team of paid editors at the Gamespy Network?

I really, really hope so...

dynamic shadows, large Cyberdemon-sized polygonal enemies, a Doom-styled railgun, 5-10 Mb bsps, less reliance on the x-y axis as a level base, 24-bit mip texture mapping, weapon-wielding enemies in Doom, cutscenes, tcp/ip, the BiggestF***ingGun, Map01 and 07 from Daikatana, ...

How cool would it be to actually see the last few marines getting shot to peices at the start of DooM 1. You know, all those bodies. That'd be cool. Of course you'd need to be on your own after the first 20 mins or so or it just wouldn't be DooM.

YES i want a new supercool DOOM with lot's of enemies on screen at the same time, beutiful gfx and the retained simple gameplay with the same storyline (well sort of). But NO, this is gonna suck badly i fear :( U see in DOOM enemies were sprites, that means tons of enemies on screen doesn't cause slow downs, but now heh.. look at Quake 3 and the bots, it get's really jerky FAST when a lot of computer controlled enemies is on screen at the same time. DOOM was/is very cool, but it kind of got it's coolness factor for being the first 3rd person shooter with good gfx and some cool powerups (Wolf3d was a much simpler game). Time changes, and yeah I want arcade style shooting back but I doubt the big mass wants it.. so ID follows the big mass and creatas DOOM 2000 semi Half-Life... OMG this is gonna suck BADLY and DOOM will get a nasty reputation.

What'd be cool is if bot like bad guys were being used. You know what I mean, people that hunt you down and run about throughout the level rather than following set paths. It'd be like multiplayer with a storyline. Intelligent bad guys.

Once upon a time, computers were slow enough that more sprites caused slowdown. Things got past that point. I think we're nearing that point with polygons.

Keep in mind that Quake first ran on p75s.. now CPUs are over ten times as fast (sure, we they're not the average box, but will be by the time this comes out) which presumably means 10 times the monsters (and then there's 3d acceleration..) Fire up a Quake editor for the original, throw in a ton of polygonal monsters, I bet it works :P

This great! The good old days are BACK and the are NOW! I can't wait for this! Just one question though, What is going to happen to the current Doom projects from the old engine? Are they going to still progress or, are they going to upgrade themselves to the new Doom engine?

DOOM Lives again! Frankly I'm not one to think that the next DOOM is going to suck. The only reason DOOM is still alive is the tremendous gameplay. The people at ID arn't dumb. They know this, and keep in mind that gameplay and FPS aren't the same thing. DOOM on a 486 at 18fps is LOADS more fun than Quake on a p-100 at 18fps. Quake will never "feel" like DOOM even if you have a 1000gigahertz processor. CPU speeds and GFX accel speeds are ever increasing. It is possible to have a big nasty eyecandy-full hog of a game, that still plays well. Perhaps, like quake, when it is released it will run like ASS unless you have the fastest machine on the market, but if the gameplay is there in a year or so FPS won't be an issue, and the graphics will still kick ass. /end rant :)

All this "you can't have tonnes of monsters on screen at once" stuff is a load of rubbish. First of all, just because Doom could support several dozen enemies on screen at once, how often did it actually happen in the original levels? Not very. Secondly, I for one do not want a game that is as difficult as Hell Revealed, plus a game that hard most certainly wouldn't appeal to the general public. Third, there are plenty of games that use polygons that have loads of creatures on screen at once without slowdown, Sin and Dungeon Keeper 2 being good examples. Fourthly, one simple word: UPGRADE!

Guys -- perhaps Doomworld could create a "Suggestion Page" which would contain just that; suggestions for keeping the old spirit of Doom while simultaneously putting forth ideas about how to improve it. It could be subdivided into various areas (monsters, levels, etc.) to keep it short(er)...I don't know. I have a suggestion though: as was mentioned earlier on this page, a lot of work needs to go into allowing more than 5 monsters on the screen at once. Doom was all about mowing down a field of imps with a double-barreled shotgun, and needs to stay that way.

All I can say is FUCK YEAH!!! DooM was the first game I ever got for my old 486, followed really closely by DooM II. I swear I'll die of friggin happiness before I get the joy of playing this new creation. Oh, yeah. For you fags that want to keep dissing DooM and the new DooM to no end, fuck off. No one made you come to Doomworld.

Even now with my P2, the excellent gameplay that keeps DooM high above Quake never dies. I swear I'll die of friggin happiness before I get the joy of playing this new masterpiece. Oh, yeah.
