Doom 3 Announced

I don't know about you, but I'm getting sick of a LOT of the weapons in the new 3D games, and even some of the old Doom ones. If id uses a huge new 3D engine, they should make some kick ass new weapons! With awesome re-loading, too! Have any of you played Perfect Dark on N64? The weapons are outstanding, and so are the re-loading animations. Make cool new weapons with reloading, id! :)

After the 6/1/2000 .plan update of John Carmack's about a doom sequel, we're obviously very keen on providing the same kind of killer coverage of the reemerging Doom scene that you've grown accustomed for the Quake series of id Software's titles. Let's say that the new Doom game gets made, and the weapon balance is okay, but the wall textures really suck, as do the levels. If Id makes a new Doom game anything like normal Doom, Doom 2000 TCs and mods will be popping up everywhere after it gets released. You'd probably even be able to recreate the original Doom episodes, but with polygonated monsters and items or something. Even if Id manages to make the game pretty crappy, if it's editable (? Is that a word?) enough, the players will recreate it. Even in the original Doom, the players have contributed way way more to it than the original designers. Id can just make a good engine and leave the rest to us, IMO.

Since sucking Quake3-Demo was released in the net first for the Mac, I am sure that they will release a Mac-port again. Ha Ha, now come on and say that we fucking Mac-users does not deserve Doom:-) Well, leaving this little propaganda: I am very happy. I do not know if the new engine will be as good as the "old" Doom (including all new source-ports) or if it will be the end for the Doom-community, but it brings new developement - as someone here said before: Support John Carmack and praise him !!!!!

if there is going to be a planetdoom, maybe this should be it! or maybe not. i dunno if they can handle our particular brand of "L33T" nor could we handle an influx of newbies. come to think of it, this probably should stay seperate from any mass absorbtion because with crowds come losers. or something.

ID will do Return to Castle Wolfenstein, DOOM III, but when will they continue with Commander Keen?

"the project is completely up to Carmack and we know the crap he turns up." Aye. Wolf. Keen. Doom. Quake. Aye.

This should be good as long as: A) They take their time and don't rush some pile of shit out for next christmas B) They get Bobby Prince for the music, no more of this shitty ambient crap - the real music sets the mood much better C) A few new weapons and monsters, and lots of nostalgia, but no super huge gameplay changes. All the weapons should induce the "Whoa that's cool i better save it for the next big guy" response we felt in the original - Note that since it's SP primarilly, cool, wierd superweapons have a place. I hope they keep the hype to a minimum - id has been so in the spotlight that twists and suprises have been revealed on the web instead of in gameplay as it should be. Suspense and suprise were the greatest parts of the Doom experience.

Yeah, id did a fantastic job on Doom and Doom2 - that's why we even have a Doomworld to come home to! Remember though that the original Dooms didn't have an actual Z-axis, it was 2 1/2-dimensional. All of the great ports like Legacy and ZDoom have done well to create a third dimension where it's due, but how will id treat it? Maybe they'll ditch the idea of Doom nostalgia and create weird ugly Cyberdemons that jump in erratic patterns and fire Rail slugs and rockets... eek. I just hope they ditch the BFG, because that gun is as gay and cheap as it gets. Hopefully they'll make the models look as awesome as the Cyberdemon Model from Q2:Generations. That guy was a savage! I wonder if they can even improve on Doom at all? Would it lose the Doom feel if they left anything out or brought anything in? Nervously awaiting the news of the next Doom, Excal_Z

And the time for Doomworld to grow and become the power it was meant to be has come... and for all those who stand in the way shall perish. Look what 2 and a half years of work can get you. We shall destroy all others!!!!!!

Forget what I posted before. I am afraid, that this could kill the Doom-community. Ricrob is right: Doom is Doom. In the worst case, it will be a Quake-Doom. Let us hope this will not be the end.

Wow, didn't expect to log on today and see that.I don't understand what's troubling people...the story won't be the same? Doom's story isn't that great anyway, and Doom 2's was worse then that.I didn't even read Final Doom's until after I beat it.You won't be able to have a few dozen monster on the screen at the same time? Yeah you will, get a new computer.Like all new games, you won't be able to run it on anything as old as a 486, or even a p2 266 with a voodoo2, if you think otherwise, you're dreaming.A new athlon with a geforce and LOD (which is already in q3, I believe) in the game, it won't be very difficult to create such a game.Anyone who wants to play it has at least a year to upgrade, so save your magic beans.I do hope DoomWorld shows up GameSpy.

.....backward WAD compatibility. Now for a few more words--this may be ridiculous, but is there any way that, instead of polygons, they can just use about 15,000 sprite frames for each character?

This is the start of a big... no huge... no ENORMOUS... <ba can't find a BIG enough word> thing looks like....

I'm gonna mark this day down on the calendar, and look back someday on the huge changes, promise, and anticipation created by events happening on and around June 1st, 2000. :-)

Let's see some of that good ol' camaraderie we saw between Doomworld and DoomNation, shared between PlanetDoom and Doomworld.... LOL ;-)

I do hope Doomworld sticks around in the future. Good memories. Nothing tops this day tho, I don't think.... :-)

DOOM was the undisputed most revolutionary game of its time and has proved to be the most popular game ever created as it's still being played; 7 years after it's release. Now, IdSoftware has a big job... To make this "next-generation" DOOM revoultionary and make everything pale in comparison. I've got my doubts as everyone does, but i believe Id will come up with some ground-breaking new stuff, such as 50 high quality computer controlled monsters on the screen at once, with little performance loss. ID has never let us down when it has come to DOOM, although they've hit a dry period with quake, a new DOOM only spells success.

There doesn't appear to be any reason id would let ol' Doom fans down. The formula should be easy---everything NOT Quakish, in ANY way ;-)

Let's hope above any technology, that id capitalizes on incorporating that certain intangible GOOD stuff they worked into Doom, that left Doomers with nothing to gorge on when it came to Quake and it's successors.

Jesus. theres alot of hatred towards a new doom game here. and the game hasnt even been released yet. nor have any of us seen screenies, enemies, weapons, etc. etc. ID bring it on! make your new doom ALL opengl! no pixilization, all anti-aliased, mirrors, all that good stuff:-) and i thought we were all going nuts over the psx doom tracks.

Maybe if enough people from the "old" Doom community get on board...

I personally think that this new game will have a substantial effect on our community. On the positive side, the community will boom again with avid doomers. On the negative side, all of the projects that have been made for ports such as ZDoom will seem like nothing compared to the new Doom engine. It will be extremely difficult to adjust to the new engine...unless everyone wants to stay with what we know...I've always wanted Doom to be remade, but what will become of all of these projects that are in development?

As much as I hate to admit it i've lost alot of respect for id software over the past years mainly due to how pathetic Quake III Arena turned out. If this goes ahead then id are sure to screw it up and destroy their best game of all time. They are not the cool company which they were in their Doom days. They have turned into a bunch of pompass loosers who have been influenced by other more pathetic developers (eg. Epic) and have lost their ability to create games of the highest quality in all areas. It is dissapointing that they are going to ruin Doom. This announcement is like a nail in Dooms coffin. Game Over...
