Guest Ronin Posted June 9, 2000 I think one of the most important things id has to consider is what are the key elements that made Doom DOOM? That may sound stupidly obvious, but I'll tell you, after playing fps for as long as they've been out, very very few games (actually none), can match the sheer visceral frenzy that Doom generated. How many of us can forget walking along a hallway, only to hear the sound of a door opening & shriek like a little girl as the room suddenly filled with snarling & drool? One of Doom's biggest strengths was it's ability to keep you from resting! There was very rarely time to plan, only to react. The sheer strength & number of monsters & the speed with which they could strike kept you constantly on edge. I know one of the reasons today's games have not been able to match that is the processing power that would be required to make that many 3d creatures. Perhaps that will change once 2ghz processors are the norm, but I think id could save themselves quite a bit of development time by coming up with a variation on the tried & true sprite-based creature. Either way, no matter how it goes, I look forward to having scores of large pink "piggies" howling for my hide, & fleeing in absolute panic. :) 0 Share this post Link to post
Guest Anonymous User Posted June 9, 2000 Tom Hall works at ION Storm. American McGee works at Ritual. John Romero was basically just a level designer, so I'm sure the team don't need him to make a new game, especially considering that they've already made Q2 and Q3 without him, and also considering that Daikatana is, in most people's opinion, rather crap. Return to Wolfenstein is way past the "planning" stage. 0 Share this post Link to post
Guest Anonymous User Posted June 9, 2000 the problem is that people like Doom for different reasons and the original came closet to pleasing all of the people. Any change from that would no doubt inflame some of the hotheaded people around here. I Personally think that no matter what happens there is bound to be some group who doesn't like it. The reason being is what you think makes Doom great is not what someelse thinks makes Doom great. Thats why even writting something into a doom port that was not considered doom-like would cause an argument. 0 Share this post Link to post

Guest Anonymous User Posted June 10, 2000 just my 5 cent... I am going to be disapointed however they make this game, even if it becomes a good game it can not live up to its namesake. i have heard tonns of great ideas on the other posts and i really liked the SWIRCH NAME idea, and the PURE DOOM TC idea! i also think it was RONIN that mantioned about some of the things people loved in DOOM, and i agree with all of my heart! not to mention the perfet balance in the qeapons, the maps in singleplayer was genious, even without the AI systems today's games can boost DOOM managed to make maps that you never was bored you allways was on the edge, and per today after 5 or 6 years intence playing of DOOM1 episode 1 i STILL jumps whenever i meet a IMP out of it place. just to mention the IMP on the top of the room in the second level episode 1 DOOM1, if you take the backpack first it sometimes go down and start hunting, and i allways jumps. that is among the things that makes me love the game, so why must they ruin it with a sequel ? -Raptor (EL) 0 Share this post Link to post
Guest Anonymous User Posted June 10, 2000 What does Geoff mean "faceless"? Doesn't anybody look at the little face pic on the status bar at the bottom of the screen? 0 Share this post Link to post
Guest Nowotny Posted June 12, 2000 I think the greatest contributer to DooM's longevity has been the fact of how easy it is to make add-ons for DooM. Let's face it, most of us mainly play DooM (since it's release) with PWADs. It's what keeps the game interesting! It would get boaring to play the original levels over & over again. (Although I still play "Knee deep in the dead" for old times sake. -Best with fast monsters!) I just hope that DooM 3 will be easy to edit so that we can make 1000's of PWADs (or their equivelent) to keep the game interesting! 0 Share this post Link to post
