I am thinking of using Dark Basic to make a 1st person shooter. I've seen a game my friend made with it and it seems quite cool, and i was wonderin if anyone here has used it.

I wouldn't pay for a compiler, and I don't really think that basic is the right language for a first person shooter, but it is by all means possible.

Darkbasic is not the best choice... There is a tool named 3dgamestudio that features a quake2-like engine. If u want more info about that, send me a mail to pagb666@usa.net

3D engines have been done in Basic. But they aren't very fast. I'd use Python to create a 3D engine.

Is there not some compiler for free on the Borland page?

Yes, Borland Turbo C, released in 1980...
