Ominous Rumors – Chapter 3

-

BJ leaned back against the damp wall in the prison cell. This reminded him a bit of his periods in jail, except that this was worse. He hadn't been given a thing to eat, and it was too cold and wet to be able to easily fall asleep. Occasionally, moans or coughs from the other, half insane inmates reached his ears. He recalled the recent events all to clearly.

-

One day, he was told to get ready for the mission. He was told that the mission was a stealth mission and that he would be airdropped over enemy territory. Furthermore, he would only get a minimum amount of arms with him. "You will likely not be needing any of your weapons as this will be an intelligence gathering mission" he was told.
He received the briefing the following day.

Agent One and Agent Two were to infiltrate the German stronghold Castle Wolfenstein. BJ had been told before the briefing that he was Agent Two. None of the two agents knew the other agent’s name, but they had been trained together and both agents had been assigned partners from the very start.
Agent one was a slim, but sturdy, dark haired fellow. He wasn’t as big as BJ but he looked like he could handle just about everything.
The two agents were given a bit of background information at first. The agency had gotten wind of some rumors from the village near the castle. Rumors that seemed so persistent that the OSA believed that the Nazis where up to something. The rumors suggested that the nazis were conducting a project codenamed “Operation: Eisenfaust” or Ironfist. The codename for the project indicated nothing good and furtermore, reports from the German resistance informed the agency that the nazis were conducting some massive archaelogocal digging near Castle Wolfenstein, so the OSA had decided that they had to act sooner rather than later and find out what exactly this “Operation: Eisenfaust” was all about and whether this digging had anything to do with it.

This was where BJ and Agent One came into the picture. They were to infiltrate the castle and obtain any information that might reveal the nature of the project. They were told that their contact in the village was a member of a German resistance movement called “The Kreisau Circle” and that the resistance member’s codename was Kessler. He would hide the two Allied spies and provide means for getting them out of the country again.

A few hours after the briefing, Blazcowicz and his comrade went aboard the British aircraft that would take them to the Castle. The two Agents were told to get some sleep as they were going to need it.

-

BJ remembered how Agent One had violently shaken him awake a few minutes before the drop. He felt the cold, fresh air in his face and knew that the door at the side of the aircraft was open.

He got up barely hindered by the heavy gear he was carrying, and stepped over to the door next to Agent One. He remembered from the briefing that the area around Castle Wolfenstein was rocky and had only a few scattered trees so there would be very few places to hide.
BJ wasn’t happy about entering enemy territory with only a knife and a colt 1911 but he had to follow his orders. He remembered the final orders given to them in a letter which they burnt just before they left: "If you are captured escape at all costs, remember, Standing Order #71 remains in effect: If you are placed in a compromising position where you might divulge information regarding your mission or the OSA, take your own life by ingesting your cyanide tablet"

BJ hated the thought of dying by swallowing cyanide. He just didn’t feel like taking his own life. If he got captured, he would rather like to take a few Nazis down and take some with him should he die in the attempt.

-

The jump went smoothly and both agents landed on the rocky ground relatively unscathed. They were supposed to meet Kessler in the village when they had investigated events at the castle. They hid their parachutes as best as they could near a fir tree. It was a lousy hiding place for their equipment but that was the best they could do. They left the chutes behind and hoped that they weren’t discovered.
They came to a narrow path leading around the mountain. It probably lead to the castle itself.

The two Agents hadn’t been able to see the castle from their landing zone, but now it suddenly appeared out of nowhere before them.
BJ stared at the sinister castle towering above them. It was a dull, gray building, which looked black and evil in the fog that surrounded the castle, and it radiated a feel of horror. BJ already hated the castle.

The sound of a man suddenly yawning, coming from around the cliff, startled the two agents and made them dive onto the ground near a small group of trees.
Two guards rounded the rocky cliff, walking relaxed along the footpath, with their submachine guns lazily resting in their hands. The two spies had only been seconds away from being discovered by the two guards and their current hiding spot wasn’t particular good.

BJ could feel his heart pound at an incredible rate. He pressed himself against the rough ground and tried to make himself as small as possible.

The guards didn’t see them and soon disappeared into the dense fog.

The two agents slowly got up. BJ stared into the fog where the two Germans had disappeared, while Agent One searched the area.

“Come on!” Agent One whispered and climbed onto a few rocks away from the path, which was undoubtedly a footpath for soldiers and thus a potential patrol route for the castle guard. The two Agents began climbing the rocks, but soon found that it was a hazardous journey. There were several loose rocks and they had to watch their step carefully.

They had almost reached the outer walls of the Castle, when the two spies came to a difficult area with a steep, rocky wall. Looking around, they found a single rock a couple feet to their left. There seemed to be some sort of natural staircase next to the rock which could help them to mount the steep wall, but they had to make a leap for the rock first in order to reach the “staircase”.
Agent One went first. He took a few steps backwards on the narrow edge they were both standing on, while pressing his back against the rocky wall and then he rushed forward as best he could and leapt onto the rock. It wobbled a bit under his weight.

He managed to get a proper foothold and after climbing a bit further up, he looked down at BJ and nodded.
BJ made a short run-up, then hurled himself into the air as best as he could and landed on the rock with a muffled sound.

Just then, the rock toppled over and fell down several feet with a lot of noise. BJ felt how the rock disappeared beneath his feet and desperately tried to hold on to something. His hand found a small ledge and he held on to it. He managed to grab on to the ledge with the other hand as well, but he was beginning to slip nonetheless. Agent One hurriedly climbed down the rocks to BJ’s rescue. BJ clenched his teeth firmly as he felt his fingers hurt from holding on to the narrow ledge. His buddy arrived just as BJ couldn’t hold on to the cliff anymore. Agent One grabbed BJ by his arm and pulled him up.
“You’re goddamn heavy, do you know that?” he whispered to BJ while panting heavily. “Can we discuss my weight later?” BJ asked with a hoarse whisper. “All this noise must have alerted the castle guard, we had better move quickly now”.
“Right!” Agent One replied and resumed climbing the last rocks.

They had only just arrived at the castle wall, when a loud gunshot rung out and dust whirled up a few feet away from them.
“Halt! Wer’s da!?” A voice sounded somewhere far above.
“Shit!” Agent One hissed and grabbed his Colt, but BJ stopped him and pointed toward a tower several hundred feet away. “There are quite likely guards in that tower and I wouldn’t be surprised if they have rifles too. The guards have a much better chance of hittin’ us than we have of hittin’ even one of them”.
Agent One gave BJ a saddened look.

“Hände Hoch, oder ich schiesse!” The German guard above them yelled. “What does that mean?” Agent One asked BJ with a whisper – he didn’t know German, which was the reason he was with BJ. BJ sighed, dropped his pistol on the rocky ground and raised his hands above his head. “It means: Hands up or I shoot!” He replied slowly.

-

BJ grinded his teeth as he thought about their capture. They had been captured without having found any information and they hadn’t even been inside the castle. He remembered how the guards had occasionally beaten both of them with the butts of their guns, while yelling at them.

He did not know what exactly the nazis would do to them, but he knew that they would be interrogated and that the nazis' interrogation technigues were absolutely dreadful. He had heard many stories about prisoners being tortured by the nazis. Sometimes they would conduct painful experiments on their prisoners.

I’m not going to hang around here, that’s for sure!

The best part so far IMHO, for me you really help create the sensations of the scene, for example the moments before the parachute jump.

I'm looking forward to 0.4 already!!

Heh, well it is in no small part thanks to Wildman and his Tomorrow's Yesterday story. This is actually one of the parts where I'm most worried that I may have ripped Wildman off a little too much.

I always had an idea that BJ parachuted in near the castle, but Wildman sorta gave me the needed inspiration (his story is after all the main inspiration for this one).

Glad you enjoy it :-)

Well, thanks, but I don't deserve any credit. Your story is very enjoyable, distinctly DSM, and stands on its own merit. Look forward to the rest. (Now, if my life would settle down for a moment, maybe I could finish TY! :)

You just do it when you have time and when you feel like it.

Thanks for the comment :-)

Nice work dsm- how much exactly are you going to deviate from the RTCW storyline?

Personally, I'd prefer that after BJ escapes, he finds his fellow Agent alive and that they both make it out, or at least Agent One survives longer than he did in the game.

Also, perhaps there could be more "stealth" elements in it i.e when he's infiltrating the airfield, he doesn't go on a rampage as it would be suicidal.

Humm, it's difficult to say how much I'll deviate from the RtCW story.
I doubt I'll let Agent One live longer than in the game, but as you can see, I've drawn "Operation: Eisenfaust" into the story and it wasn't in RtCW (sadly enough). There will be other deviations where I feel that the RtCW made little sense (forget about leather clad chicks - I can't put them into the story in a way so that they make sense).

Don't worry about stealth elements. I am planning to have some stealth elements in the story to make it interesting and different from Evil Unleashed.
