Peter Heinemann Posted January 27, 2001 Alright, this is the second time I recommend "Kill! Zone", but since I got no response the first time I want to make sure. I just play it again and it is one of the best I have seen so far: **** KILL! Zone v1.0 [Episode one] "The Trek Begins" **** Created by: Don Howard ftp://ftp.task.gda.pl/pub/games/idgames/levels/doom2/j-l/kill_z10.zip 1.1MB zipped, 7 big (gigiantic) Levels Note that there is a wad with a similar name: Craig J. Dudle: "KILLZONE" about 270 kb "KILLZONE" is nice, you cannot compare it with "Kill! Zone". I think "Kill! Zone" from Don Howard is a well done piece! I have not seen such a complex and creative level-design for a long time (or before). It is a slaughterhouse. Sometimes, I was really frightened by such a violent combat. The levels are sometimes a bit quake-ish and makes very good use of 3-D (I mean, they are not flat). The lightning very cool, too. Some people do not like death-traps like the sewer in level 3, but I think it fits good to this wad. You should be able to play it with original Doom2, with a few visplane-error here and there, and I can remember one HOM-error in Level 6, but it looked funny. After finishing level two, I combined KILL! Zone with the sound-and graphics wads of Roks-Doom, a Legacy Deathmatch-Mod, and played it with the roks-hacked MacDoom-exe (I use a PowerMacintosh, so "exe" is not true). The sounds of Roks-Doom and its gray sky are now added to KILL! Zone´s sound-atmosphere and that is a great combination. (without Roks it is great too, especially the shot-sounds of the barons :-) Even though Roks has a high-speed chaingun, a napalm-minelauncher and a flamethrower, I do not think this is like cheating. Maybe it is a little like cheating, because Roks replaces Kill!Zone´s "Chaingun-fire from nowhere" (you will be shot, but cannot see any enemy) with friendly ambient wind sounds (Have found this out after finishing "Kill !Zone", have to play it once again). The atmospheric sounds which make use of stereo are very good. I used text from my first posting some month ago, well - I am a lazy-bone :-) Got it, Marines? Dismissed! 0 Share this post Link to post
Biffy Posted February 15, 2001 Peter, I got it and played some. Yeah, it's pretty good and was a lot of work. Here's one I don't think many have tried but it has my vote as best doom2 conversion of it's genre, by FAR. Osiris.wad. Osiris is the Egyptian god of the dead and this wad immerses you in Egyptian graphics and monsters. Starts out 'normally' enough, but when you go through the stargate, you'll be stunned. Play it with zdoom or equivalent, and don't use the zipped batch file. Just run the wad and dehacked file. I think the dehacked patch was osiris.deh, so you use zdoom.exe -file osiris.wad -deh osiris.deh. :) 0 Share this post Link to post
Peter Heinemann Posted February 18, 2001 Thank you for your reply to my post. I already thought the "wads and mods" section here would be kind of "post-graveyard" since I posted this 3 times without any response :-) Great that you like it, but also try out the wad with the similiar name "Killzone" ... it is not from that kind of quality, but still good and should be in your collection (those crazy collectors...). It seems not to be on ftp.cdrom.com, I got it from a Wad compilation CD and if you like I drop it to you by email (around 250kb). Just say if you like to have it. ----- Again: thank you for your repley. Whilst browsing through ftp.cdrom´s archives, I discovered the sequel to "Kill!Zone" I recommended first and that you now have beguny: "KILL!Zone II, Episode #2: "The Lust for BLOOD!" ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames/levels/doom2/j-l/killzon2.zip 1,708 KB That one will be my next WAD to play!!! ----- Osiris: That TC is really fantastic! I have not finished it yet (I discontinued it, but pick up the gauntlet again). I played it on MacintoshDoom and it worked really well. (But I am also able to run ZDoom, since I got a most unwanted christmas present some weeks ago... :-) Did you know that "Osiris" is the sequel to "Anubis"? If you have Osiris, no need to try out Anubis, Osiris is much more complete, Anubis was only a stepstone. And there is "Egypt", based on the same egyptian theme ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames/levels/doom2/d-f/egypt.zip 1,200KB Both wads, Osiris and Egypt were reviewed on Doomoscope/Wadoscope (interesting Doom recource) http://home.worldnet.fr/~bdevaux/Doomoscope/SPages/Reviews/Osiris.htm http://home.worldnet.fr/~bdevaux/Doomoscope/SPages/Reviews/Egypt.htm The main page of Doomoscope is http://home.worldnet.fr/~bdevaux/Doomoscope/ you can also go to Wadoscope and the Wad menue from there. 0 Share this post Link to post
