Keep it simple, but not repeditive...

As it was demonstrated many years ago with DOOM itself, it is possible to keep a game very simple without being repeditive. Doom had only 7 weapons (The BFG wasn't a weapon, it was a tool for inexperienced people to play at the REAL difficulty levels):
Fists, Chainsaw, Pistol, Shotgun, Chaingun, Rocket Launcher, and Plasma Gun. DOOM also had only 10 enemies, and a bunch of old-style arcade classic power-ups. Just because we can now add hundreds of weapons and enemies dosn't mean we should. I play DOOM using not only skill but strategy. If there is a Baron of Hell (Not a 'Hell Prince', whatever that is) and a Cacodemon in one room, I try to get them to fight while dodging their shots at the same time. It's possible to use the right weapon for the right demon, given the situation which may depend on the room, your health, or anything else. Doom had just enough enemies for you to become totally fluent in the way of fighting each. The real strategy came from entering a room of a certain combination of enemies, and knowing how to deal with it. So here's the deal, keep it limited, but allow for possibilities. Perhaps two different enemies that you know individually back to front would be able to do something when they were together, and you had to react differently again to overcome them.

Keep this in mind:

Never was the game of chess enhanced with the adition of more or newer classes.

Chess has changed quite a bit over the last thousand years or so. Originally, the queen was the least powerful piece (only 1-square diagonal moves allowed). The pawn couldn't move two squares on the first move. And the "bare king" win was more common than the "checkmate." There have been more changes, but none come to mind at the moment.

So HA!

u forgot to mention the super shotgun that makes it eight weapons

Notice how I said DOOM in the very first line, not DOOM 2? I was specifically refering to DOOM 1, as it was the original game that created all the excitement. DOOM 2 was simply an expansion pack that didn't require the original game...
