Why id will never be a company that just makes engines:

id would never be a company that just makes engines because most of the control within the company is held by the artists.

If id just made engines, then they wouldn't really need artists, would they. This'll never happen. id would sooner dissolve then go to making engines.

If id really does do a bad job on DooM 3, and they decide to give up on FPS, then they'll just do something else and people will like them just as much.

Kaopectate you make a damn good point there.

I thought I'd just add that LithTech is an engine company now. Most of you in here probably hate LithTech, however I like that engine quite a bit. There's no doubt that it's the fastest Direct3D game engine available. It's also available at a decent price and with it comes great tech support. When companies license an engine from iD they don't get tech support; they just get the engine and that's that.

Hmm, makes you wonder. If far off in the future, the main competitive engines would be Serious Engine 3, Unreal 4, Doom 5, or LithTech 6.

Just a thought.

Lithtech, yea, that is a damn good engine. Fast with all supports, and allows plenty of monsters at once without glitching or running slow. But DooM3's will be good, but you never know what engines will lurk by then...
