Doom 3 Engine Ideas 4

The biggest advantages the engine will offer are:
1)Stencil Buffers for True Lighting on maps (No more lightmaps!)
2)3D Textures (Don't know how will they help but I read it is good)
3)Dot 3 Bumpmapping (I know it is good that carmack is using this technique but if anyone can explain to me how much of increased visual quality will it give over Quake 3 please do)
4)Some new way to store levels (don't know how will it help)
AND OF COURSE THIS IS NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT THE ENGINE WILL OFFER!!!!
And for the end I want to say that when Doom 3 comes out we will have more powerful computer and YES it is going to take some time to reach Quake 3 FPS!! Doom 3 will require MUCH FILLRATE which NOT EVEN THE ULTRA CAN PROVIDE!!!!!!!!

But by the time Doom 3 comes out, will the PC's of that year be strong enough te reach Quake 3 Framerate? Or is it going to be like Trespasser... I mean, ID can't afford to make the same mistake as the developers of Trespasser made...

I'm still a little worried about the framerate of Doom 3

Well don't be!
Carmack clearly said that by the time Doom 3 comes out we will be able to play it with many features on including FSAA at 60hz!
He did say that today's cards will have to run at fairly low resolution and drop a feature or 2 and it still won't get 60hz!
But by the time Doom 3 comes out the first option seems more logical to me!
The reason this happens is because Quake 3 Engine was built with Speed it's first priority(Because of multiplayer only components) but since Doom 3 is a single player game Carmcak will make sure that the engine will rock!!
He will make sure that this time the Graphics is the first priority! Don't worry about the FPS! CARMACK KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING!!!! ALL HIS ENGINES WERE SUCCESCFUL UNTIL NOW!!!! SO DON'T WORRY!!!!! DOOM 3 ENGINE WILL ROCK BIG TIME!!!!!!!!

Dammit! Why can't he make the engine fast with ALL the features turned on? Why doe he have to cop out and use the old "just turn off some features" excuse?

I couldn't give a rat's ass whether the Quake 3 engine was successful or not. I've never touched it, and I never will.

When Romero left, iD's corporate philosophy concerning the people who actually BUY the games, the players, US... left with him. It seems Carmack is little concerned with the amount of money we will have to spend to play the damn game. Romero cared just as much about putting cool effects into the game, but he tempered it with concern for framerate. Playabilty and the fun derived therefrom was always his priority.

Even if we all had unlimited funds to spend on hardware, assuming that the hardware at release date will be capable of supporting the game, is a very bad mistake.

I brought up the Tresspasser analogy a few posts ago. Doom 3 is definitely in danger of repeating history in EXACTLY this manner. If not for Doom loyalty, I would believe Doom 3 may fail.

The bottom line is, we should not be FORCED to own a cutting-edge, top-of-line, massively expensive machine just to play a FREAKING GAME!!!! God DAMN this is pissing me OFF!!!!!!

I have Q3A, and i can tell you, is the sweetest engine I´be ever seen. It is damn fast if you get to know what things handle. Don´t be worry about how "well optimized" is D3 engine, because is likely to be the most fast (in relation quality/framerate) for the next years. But, unfortunately, as much as you optimize the rendering code, there´s a limit for framerate boost. D3 will need a LOT of power, but MUCH LESS (i can guarantee that) than any other Dot-3 bump-mapping capable engine. Carmack had won many awards by its engines, this is not going to be failure.

Today´s hardware isn´t enough for a 1024x768 full-quality style of game, but Nvidia, 3DFX and others now can see the importance of bump-mapping hardware support, because many engines will have this feature in the future. So, more dedicated hardware will be available in the next months, and according to our present technollogy curve, it will be more than enough to get the desired framerate.

Carmack is not playing "lazy programmer", he´s pushing technology into the future.
THE ENGINE WILL BE FAST!! Its the hardware the problem now.

And i can tell you, you´re not buying or upgrading to an expensive machine just to play DooM3, you´re doing it to have a global performance boost, all games & utilities in 2002 will need more power than today´s PC.

I think it is highly under-optimized.

I don't have hardware 3d acceleration and the damn thing won't even run!

I think they should try to get these things to look as good as possible without all the sparkling gadgets.

I have a p333 and 64meg of ram. I feel I should be able to run the thing. But nooooo, iD had to go get in bed with 3dfx and ruin the game for all the normal people here.

If you think the engine in Quake 3 is under-optimised, do not play Ultima Ascension. That game is apparently jerky even on a P3 750 with a Voodoo 5 :(
