Proof that Carmack & Co had been thinking about Doom3 for a long time now: go to audiofind.com and search "carmack" - you'll come across an MP3 of a 30-minute speech our God-Emperor gave in the early development of Quake 3. He talks a bit about Doom 3, Return to Wolfy and more interesting stuff.

And if you've never heard a recording of Carmack's studly voice, you really should - it's hysterical :)
