What if... (a D3 related post)

Okay, imagine for a moment ID had gone straight from Doom 2 to making a third game in the series. It would have had the same engine, etc (possibly updated in some ways), and the same people making it, but what new stuff do you reckon they would have added or changed in terms of monsters, weapons, levels, etc?

I've got my own ideas (which I'll post later), but I'm interested in seeing other people's thoughts.

It's hard to answer this question without knowing the direction that the game in general would take.
ENEMIES
I honestly don't think that they would have gotten rid of any enemies. Even right after the release, Doom 2 had far too great a fan base to make any changes like that. A new flying enemy probably... maybe another larger boss-like enemy as well... and new zomie-like creatures (or imp-like creatures for that matter).
WEAPONS
I wouldn't expect much change here. Maybe the grenade launcher. It was in Quake, so they were obviously thinking about it at the time. Perhaps an upgraded chaingun as well.
LEVELS
Doom and Doom 2 had distinctly different feels as far as levels go. This can be attributed directly to the location of the games. Without knowing the story direction, it is very difficult to say how this would have unfolded. Judging from Quake, though, I would imagine it would have been darker in setting that Doom 2.

Given the changes between Doom and Doom 2, I would see this hypothetical Doom 3 having 1 new weapon, 4 new enemies, and 32-45 very boring levels.

No, they wouldn't have used a grenade launcher. It would have been hard to make, and not work well, concidering the way the original engine worked.
