Guest WalkingBeard Posted February 7, 2001 I want to see the boat pushed out here. I want really bizzarre, phreako stuff, like distorting levels (like the pulsating bits in Q3A) but which randomly switch the layout of the level. I want clouds and random floaty bits and bits where everything is upside down. In fact, now I think about it, in Half Life, where you go to Xen. Like that, but less tame. The enemies have to come out of the walls and be a part of them. I want gloppy bits that really ooze. And vortices. Where if you turn one way, things look different. It has to completely spin you out, man. Yeah, baby. What also is needed is variety in the music. Looking back at e1m1? The music was hard and fast (in fact a remake with real instruments might be in order) and got you in the mood to kick some demonic arse. And then there were the more ambient tracks. What is needed is not the end of the original Doom music, or the Quake music or the Quake 2 music, it is a mixture of them. Even the music from the second set of Diablo levels would fit in for Hell. Of course, it has to be original. At the end of the day, there had been first person games before Doom, but Doom took the genre, tore off its tattered coat and dressed it in the fine silk shirt of graphics and the smooth chinos of gameplay and gave it the dash of style and fear with the boots and haircut. Doom 3 has to do that to satify everyone. 0 Share this post Link to post
Lüt Posted February 7, 2001 Oh great. Will it ever end? At least his name is amusing. 0 Share this post Link to post
NiGHTMARE Posted February 7, 2001 Are you kidding? Xen was by far one of the crappiest series of levels in any FPS ever made, and the only really disappointing part of Half-life. 0 Share this post Link to post
Zaldron Posted February 7, 2001 Arrgh... Xen... that was the greatest failure on HL. It wasn´t the ONLY boring level set, take for example the railroad part, or crate-o-land, or the lambda complex (with the rotating teleporters and the 45,000 big guys with the mosquitoe gun. The best levels of Half-Life were those that looked like offices & restrooms. Those were the most scripted. 0 Share this post Link to post
NiGHTMARE Posted February 7, 2001 I personally preffered the levels in the official add-on pack, Opposing Force, as they were more "unique", for example the underwater lab, or the bit where you're wandering around places from Half-life's intro. 0 Share this post Link to post
Zaldron Posted February 7, 2001 Yeah, I agree. Opposing Force has the charm of unique settings. From all the official HL levels, the first 2 sets are the best because they feel more like "survivence" than "quest". Speaking of that, this is a really important thing to consideer in DooM3. You may have the greatest level design, but if they´re factories, barracks, headquarters and power stations : ZZzzzz... These sets were completely and utterly wasted in Quake2. I hope iD brings some interesting levels, besides gorgeous. Alice, for example, is one of the few games were the levels get more and more interesting as you move. But of course, this is really easy to do when the world is a bizarre, wacky place. 0 Share this post Link to post

What's wrong with it? btw in Opposing force, did you find the bit where you visit the HL training map? 0 Share this post Link to post
