Personally, option 1 seems like the more likely answer taking Doom64 into account.
Or it could be that there are different marines fighting in different games.

Doom 1 Marine Dies at the end of E1M8 and option 2 is true.

Doom 2 Marine Saves the Earth twice. Once in Doom 2 and once more in Doom 64 a long time later.

The real explanation for the E1M8 "death" is that they wanted the shareware episode to end on a cliffhanger to get you to buy the game. All story explanations about it are really just flavor text.

Like I said, Doomguy does die. But there is a Yandere Archvile who keeps resurrecting him. He never sees the Archvile that stalks him because Doomguy is his/her senpai and as we all know, senpai never notices you.

This also explains why the track that plays on MAP02 of Doom-2 is called "The Healer Stalks"
