I wanted to ask who in their right mind would even add/allow it in the first place, but it actually fits pretty well with Freedoom's content prior to the latest additions.

Looks like this was added back in prehistoric times (ie. before Freedoom was even in version control). I guess someone submitted it and I never checked it. Kind of amazingly I don't think I've ever actually heard this sound - I guess I've never defeated the boss spitter while playing Freedoom.
