Hey I am new here but very old to doom, I make huge complex wads with fuckloads of new monsters, weapons, artifacts & textures in them from the 667 doom forum. I have 7 of them completed. Im not sure anyone makes them like this nor am I sure anyone will be interested in completely nuts wads. This is a link to 1 of 7 that I have done. I hope at least 1 person will enjoy playing this/these wad(s) Also, if this in not the correct place to post stuff; I am sorry about that = it was just the 1st place I could find to doso

Has anything notably special happened in Freedoom's development this year in comparison with the previous 15 years of its development?

According to their website, nothing much has changed since last December. (So there's definitely nothing that would count for the 2016 cacos.) I played the previous version (0.9) in 2014 and had a lot of fun, so I'm going to have to check out the latest version...

"Best Doom Music of the Year" or something like that.

Seconded. Originality here is increasingly becoming a selling point for taking the time to play new wads.

Japanese Community Project +1.

H-Doom (for mock award) +1

It's nice of you to say that, and as much as I appreciate the amount of effort you've put into Freedoom recently, it makes this almost like a self-nomination.

+1 to Nex Credo, now that my T/nC review of it is published. I know it's not everybody's thing, but I feel like someone ought to nominate it, so I am.

+1 to JPCP. Wad of the year so far for me, though I still haven't played AA.

Probably a little early still, but here's some initial thoughts on major Mapper of the Year contenders:

Valkiriforce: I don't mean any disrespect to Khorus, but I've always found it surprising that Krizik didn't get the award in 2012, and with the comeback he's been having, he's my personal top pick for 2016. Assuming Absolute Dishonor is released this year (which sounds probable) and either it or Vispire gets a Cacoward, and also taking into account his several smaller releases already this year, I feel like it's a no-brainer -- but I thought that four years ago too, so who knows?

Pipicz: Bloodstain has been his only release so far this year, but it's a full 32-level megawad and an almost certain Cacoward winner.

Skillsaw: So far nobody has gotten MotY twice, and I strongly agree with that practice, but a few of the alums have done really impressive things this year. Ancient Aliens and Sawdust released in the same year, and just a year after Valiant? Jesus.

40oz: For Mutiny and Absolute Dishonor, and hopefully that's just the beginning. Still, if they're going to give a second MotY to anyone, it would probably have to be skillsaw.

Finally finished Ancient Aliens, and if I were in charge, I would want to give it at least three Cacowards: one for the megawad, one for stewboy's map, and one for Kassman's.

I also have to agree with the seemingly common feeling that AA begs for a whole new category of award just for aesthetics. "Best Art" doesn't really cut it, but AA part of a trend in recent years (BTSX => Valiant/Sunlust => AA, and maybe Sunder before all that). I keep thinking that Doom has hit the pinnacle of what it can do visually, but these are the wads that continue to push the boundaries and keep delivering a sense of wonder even as we get more and more jaded. It's more about general creativity than good wall textures. I don't know if there's room for something like that in the Cacoward lineup, but I feel like the existence of that award gets more and more worthwhile every year.

Seconded on this (or, since it's an apparently common view, another voice), Ancient Aliens really excels aesthetically. In my eyes, that and BtSX have really upped the ante for aesthetics in the Doom engine. Sunlust is great too, as mentioned (I haven't played Valiant though, alas, so I cannot comment) -- all three/four (two eps of BtSX) is Doom mapping at the top of its game from all standpoints, but their looks betray the age and limitations of the engine.

IMO this must be recognised.

I'm inclined to agree with this as well, for what it's worth.
