In Defense of Hell Revealed

Hell Revealed is one of the toughest megawads I've played. When I first played Hell Revealed, it almost felt like it was impossible. After beating it, it really helped me tackle more difficult doom wads out there, such as Speed of Doom, Resurgence, Alien Vendetta, and such. Hell Revealed now may not be as nearly as difficult as wads like Sunlust or anything by Ribbiks, but it's still a great wad nonetheless.

Overall, Hell Revealed isn't that insane. You just need to plan a good strategy and know what you're doing. The architecture and layout was impressive and amazing at the time it was first released. Even though there are some maps I didn't like and some crazy slaughter maps, I still enjoy it a lot to this date, including many of the slaughter maps.

Here's a playthrough of Hell Revealed I redid last year if anybody's interested to check it out:

I'm glad you could see that Hell Revealed, despite being indeed a tough megawad, is not that insane. In fact, it is a good follow-up to Plutonia, though honestly I find Plutonia to be tougher if not on par due to throwing in heavyweight enemies right from the start. I mean, as you notice in HR, you don't see much of the high-tier enemies early on and they are introduced steadily before coming in full force from Map11. Plutonia on the other hand, right from Map01, it never lets up. No progressive monster introduction whatsoever, it just starts ramming you at the very beginning of the megawad. Nevertheless, both HR and Plutonia have their own strengths and weaknesses that makes it a tie between each other and are great starters for the bigger and nastier wads like Resurgence and Speed of Doom. I may not have played Sunlust or Ribbiks's wads, but from what I saw in playthroughs is that they offer an entirely different style of gameplay which is more similar to the likes of Deus Vult and Sunder, where, as I'll quote Tosi, involves memorising the location of power-ups, expert crowd control, and heavy leveraging of monster infighting.
