well, memory plays tricks sometimes, doesn't it... it was the Outcast levels for the original Doom 64: Absolution TC, and for some weird reason I was still stuck on Outcast 1: Destroy. Seems I didn't bother to backtrack enough to get out of what I thought was a trapped-in area, and find the exit.

Yeah, Lost Levels is the new episode that came with the Steam release of Doom 64 and it's pretty bad. Is that an unpopular opinion around here? It's like 7 maps that are all really linear and boring. Tiny rooms full of Hell Knights and Pain Elementals, 90 degree walls everywhere, only one or two scripted sequences, and two of the maps are just ripoffs of Unholy Temple and No Escape. They didn't even bother to put in a secret exit anywhere even though they made a brand-new "Fun" level. It just feels like a series of speedmaps created at the last minute to give Doom 64 EX users a reason to buy the new port.

Is being able to legally own and play Doom 64 on PC not good enough of a reason for you?

Because if I recall right, Doom 64 EX requires the N64 ROM image, which I do not believe can be legally distributed.

if you have the cart you can dump it, though

as long as you destroy the original cart with a super shotgun IRL

Yeah, but few people still have the original cartridge. Hence why it is good that the game is now available on PC in a digital format.

Choosing a lower difficulty because UV is kicking your ass is not a sign of weakness and does not make you lesser of a player. :3

Actually one of my Doom pet peeves is when playtesters try and fail at a map on UV, something meant to be Hard Mode, and then write it off as if the other difficulties don’t exist. Like they’re not decorations guys you can play them and still keep your balls you know (notwithstanding if you were ball-less beforehand of course)

Now, yes, I also acknowledge the counterpoint that UV shouldn’t be literally impossible, but honestly if a mapper wants their map to just be mind-bendingly difficult on UV and still implements functional difficulty levels then I don’t think there’s any harm in that. Someone will be hardcore/insane enough to beat it then, and they’ll be very glad to have had the challenge.

Meanwhile for folks like me, there’ll be ITYTD and I’ll be glad for that too

This is why I personally will switch to HMP if a map proves too hard for me at my skill level. After all, I've only been Dooming properly for a year. Some people are too proud or think the lower difficulties aren't valid for some odd reason. In truth, it helps the mapper regardless which is the only thing I've ever cared about.

Oh hell yeah. Like I’m glad for playtesters to demonstrate my maps are possible on UV, but I love when people test on lower difficulties too. After all, I want my work to be accessible, and I certainly want to know if inexperienced players can beat them without getting bored on lower difficulties.

People who hate GZDoom for its gameplay or graphic changes are probably illiterate and don't know how to read the options menues.

i am insanely late with this, but gzdoom changes so much that a lot of it can't actually be changed in the compatibility menu

Playing with mods does NOT mean that you hate Doom, sometimes you can just get bored with vanilla and want to enhance your experience.

I don't like the majority of DOOM 2 maps, though I can't blame Petersen for it, the man designed most of the doom levels and constantly tried new things with his design.

Also dead simple would be a good DM map if there were no partial invisibility powerups.

I thought UV was the intended, "normal" difficulty, lol.

Nope, that'd be Hurt Me Plenty, mate. It works like this, basically:

I'm Too Young to Die: Really easy

Hey Not So Rough: Easy

Hurt Me Plenty: Medium/Normal

Ultra-Violence: Hard

Nightmare: STUPIDLY Hard (meme difficulty that was added later by id Soft as a joke)

the absolute biggest one is demo compatibility, which is kind of a huge deal for people in the competitive scene

Am actually starting to think that whilst i might be able to move to playing UV from HMP in time, i might not want to.  It might get too stressful and result oriented for me.

And it doesn't mean at all i'd not want to have the skills to play UV - would be fun in competitions.

DOOM 3 has gotten much less community love than it truly deserves

There is tons of platforming in games wherever you go, whether jumping and climbing over obstacles to get to hidden areas, or a little platformer-based flash game.

Why is it a cardinal sin in Doom?

Spoiler

I have noticed some people get upset just because they have to run across two platforms for just a single second, or have to actually let go of their W key for once. :/

Misri Halek, despite being a superb map, is not that memorable but the music is legendary and remains eternally engraved in the mind at the first listening.

I think the cacowards team should do a top 100 most memorable midis used in doom wads. This music would be in the top 10 or even the top 3.

Rayman M has better deathmatch mechanics than Doom. The only thing that ruined it was the complete lack of network play capacity.

This bit here is dead on tho.

This bit should be spammed all over the Cacoward Team's inboxes until it happens.

Thread tax:

HabitatNirvana and so on are interesting, worthwhile experiences, fight me! E2M9, E3M8 & MAP30 are the real black sheep of the Doom series (though they are still masterpieces compared to Betray *shudders*).
