Spectre01 Posted March 15, 2021 (edited) 15 hours ago, Dunn & Dunn said: There is tons of platforming in games wherever you go, whether jumping and climbing over obstacles to get to hidden areas, or a little platformer-based flash game. Why is it a cardinal sin in Doom? There are multiple reasons people find Doom platforming to be frustrating compared to other (even FPS) games. The slidey movement where your character doesn't come to a full stop quickly, lack of air control, and inability to look up and down in faithful ports to easily align yourself or know when you're about to fall off the edge. A little platforming can be fun, but I'm no fan of the super strict variety requiring high precision. Re: Misri Halek talk above. It's atmospheric and technically impressive for its size/linedef count within vanilla limits, but the gameplay can feel like a real slog. There are a lot of Nobles to SSG down in the opening half until you get better weapons/ammo. The DWMC thread for AV had a good variety of opinions on it, rather than everyone gushing about how it's the greatest map of all time. There's an old Scratch game I played a long time ago that had this similar ice-like movement - I think that's the one that helped me learn moving back on command to avoid sliding off platforms and such. https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/17076654/ It's very upsetting how some people can't stand platforming for all the wrong reasons, if you know what I mean. Having a bad mindset about something won't make you better at it. Getting Over It is no exception. I'm working on a video of that one. xX_Lol6_Xx Posted March 15, 2021 Playing in I'm too young to die is fully valid, and so does Hey Not Too Rough, even Hurt Me Plenty, whoever says the opposite should play Sigil and see if he/she changes his/her mind. 1 Share this post Link to post
sefus Posted March 15, 2021 Classic doom isn't that hard compared to a lot of other shooters out there, but that doesn't make it any less fun. 4 Share this post Link to post

I thought Sigil was one of the more tame wads out there. This isn't a brag, I get my ass kicked by stuff that's considered moderately difficult, like ancient aliens and btsx, but Sigil never really gave me too much trouble. 1 Share this post Link to post

It is a lot harder on UV than in HMP. 0 Share this post Link to post

I usually play on HMP, UV is very hard for me XD, what bugs me is people who say that playing in the lower difficulties is invalid and isn't the legitimate way to play Edited March 16, 2021 by Lol 6 2 Share this post Link to post

Just ignore it and play how you want. Edited March 16, 2021 by Dunn & Dunn 4 Share this post Link to post
Orchid87 Posted March 16, 2021 Different game, but Duke Nukem 3D Lunar Apocalypse is a better space station themed mapset than Doom E1. 3 Share this post Link to post
CasualScrub Posted March 18, 2021 I don't know about anyone else, but after the current Doom storyline/games are done, I kinda want them to take a more... I guess down-to-earth take with Doom for a little while. I mean in the sense that I kinda want them to take a "Doom 3" approach with it, where it was more horror-themed and a little less frantic/fast-paced. 2 Share this post Link to post

Not related to Doom, but E2 of Duke3D is very underrated. I still remember the time when I first got to E2M4 and witnessed the alien infested station. And who can forget about E2M8: Dark Side. Easily the best level in Duke3D. 3 Share this post Link to post

I think the cacowards team should do a top 100 most memorable midis used in doom wads. This music would be in the top 10 or even the top 3. when i first played alien vendetta i thought the community would give more credit to toxic touch than misri halek. misri halek is waaaaay too long. (although i admire and respect it as well) here's my mildly warm take: the midi 'stars' fits better in speed of doom map31 than in valiant map31 0 Share this post Link to post
DisgruntledPorcupine Posted March 19, 2021 First post here so these could be the most milquetoast unpopular opinions ever for all I know. :) Doom I is my least favourite IWAD. Obviously I respect the hell out of it for paving the road, but the dated mapping style really gets to me and I find it an absolute snooze to play. E2M6 is still a map I love though and the music is overall superior to Doom II's (although I like TNT most out of the IWADs for music). The Chasm is a solid map. Gameplay is pretty decent and visually it's my favourite in Doom II. Bobby Prince's midis can get kind of annoying to listen to for me. He has tracks I love (Sinister, Into Sandy's City, Dark Halls), but I find his overusage of 12 bar blues style melodies (or in general how often he plays out a melody for a few bars and then plays it again but at a slightly higher pitch) kind of irritating to be honest. Even some of my favourites aren't immune to that trope, but it leads to some of his midis that don't have the atmosphere to back it up just sounding kind of uninspired and boring. 2 Share this post Link to post
GraphicBleeder Posted March 19, 2021 Doom Eternal's soundtrack is annoying and grating to listen to. 0 Share this post Link to post

DisgruntledPorcupine Posted March 19, 2021 +1 for team Toxic Touch. I adore both maps personally but Toxic Touch wins for me in gameplay, is at least on par music-wise, and is one of the most awe-inspiringly gorgeous uses of all vanilla textures I can think of. 0 Share this post Link to post

Dwimepon Posted March 19, 2021 Okay, there, I'll say it. I prefer the regular shotgun to the SSG. It's just so faster and fun to use - I like to call it a "point-and-click" weapon because it kills pretty much any of the lowest-tier enemies in one hit. The SSG feels great mind you but the animation, sounds and snappiness of the normal shotgun is just out of this world. 4 Share this post Link to post

Ahead of you are 3 shotgunners in the far distance. Taking them out with the shotgun would be impractical. So snipe them with the pistol. 7 Share this post Link to post

I usually kill them with the shotgun because it's easy and I like how the sound effects mix together. But yeah, for managing ammo, the pistol would be pretty useful, especially because of its pinpoint accuracy when you fire it slower. Then again, shotgunners can also snipe you, and if you waste too much time with the pistol, they could get a few good shots in. 2 Share this post Link to post
