You mean the UI checkboxes for "disable this or that", which get mysteriously reverted to their default on state on various updates? Even the enterprise edition (which has finer "security" controls) leaks hundreds or thousands of connection attempts per day to microsoft servers. If you really want to stop that you need to block all outgoing communication and allow specific stuff with a firewall, which requires both time, frustration, and a second device (at least, my router GUI is nightmarish and I would only attempt this firewall task with a dedicated machine). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Apparently the author of that story retracted it, and it's also been refuted I guess? But it is good to scrutinize and keep an eye on these big companies no doubt. http://www.zdnet.com/article/when-it-comes-to-windows-10-privacy-dont-trust-amateur-analysts/ 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
DooM_RO Posted March 16, 2016 I'm still rocking my 5 year old i5 2500k and probably will for at least a couple more years. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
StarFyre Posted March 16, 2016 I run games @ 5760x1080 (Eyefinity 1080P each screen - 3x 27 inch monitors) Intel I7-3930K 8 gigs ram OCZ Vertex 3 SSD Sapphire Tri-X 290x So far, games like FarCry 4 i can run well, but i do have to lower some settings. I'm wondering how much i have to lower DOom to make it smooth on this PC. With twins arriving in 2-3 weeks, wont be upgrading. My plan is to upgrade when video cards can handle eyefinity 60fps maxed settings with 3 4K monitors. Friend who works @ one of the video card companies says that's still a few years away :) So want to get by on this PC for now. Thoughts? Regards, Sanjay 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

StarFyre Posted March 16, 2016 Sorry, i wasn't clear: If anyone has been part of the alpha, or beta or whatever, from how it runs, do you think lots of people will need to lower settings? is this game as intensive as Metro, or Crysis 3, etc? I'm just concerned cause I run 3 monitors, but Far Cry 3 and 4 are fine with a few setting adjustments. Regards, Sanjay 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

You shouldn't be worried, SandyBridge chips still flexes some muscles even compared to the new architectures, your i5-2500k @ 4.8Ghz will be equal to the i5-6600k @ stock 3.9Ghz clock While the i7-2600k need a 5.2Ghz OC to be equal to the i7-6700k @ stock 4.2Ghz clock.. Regards, Sanjay There wasn't any texture quality or switchable graphic options in the Alpha, there was only screen resolution and AA options, which has almost no effect at all on the frame rate running on a stock clocked i7-2700k & GTX980.. the game looked like it needs more optimization, there was a bit of stuttering and a lot of screen tearing "no v-sync option", also there was some texture pop-ups.. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

No reason not to squeeze that extra juice out of it :) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

The i7 3770 at 3.9ghz and 12 gigs of ram, as far as CPU and memory is concerned, is enough to play any game on the market now and probably for at least another year or two. the cpu is @ 3.5ghz - the boost does not run permanently and it depends on how many cores are actually in use 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Deatheye Posted March 19, 2016 oh I want to add something: when it comes to memory, much Mhz doesn't mean it's fast, the frequency + the latency! put together are important - 3000Mhz DDR4 can be slower than 1333Mhz DDR3 - yes, the differences are very small overall, but they're existing and here is an example how the intel turbo boost technology works: if 1 core is in use, this 1 core gets the full 400Mhz boost but when - for example 4 cores - are in use the 400Mhz split up and every core only gets around 100Mhz 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

What CPU are you looking at? lol thats what im trying to figure out... right now all i can say is the best sub $400 part that will fit in that case, probably intel, and i dont mind a non stock cooler if it will be a) quieter and or cooler, and b) fit. i dont mind amd but seems like they are way behind the performance curve? there was a time i was more informed about the hardware world, but that time has passed lol. my goal is to get 30-60 fps maxed out or nearly maxed out settings @ 1080p for the duration of the xbox one/ps4 generation. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

AMD right now is not competitive at those price points. Single-thread CPU performance is just not good and the platforms are not particularly modern. For now, Intel is the clear choice for the vast majority of gaming PCs. With that in mind, here's what I would recommend: CPU: Core i7 4790K - $319.99 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117369&cm_re=4790k-_-19-117-369-_-Product) Motherboard: ASUS H97I-PLUS motherboard - $99 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132123&cm_re=h97_mini_itx-_-13-132-123-_-Product) RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) G.SKILL DDR3-1600 - $72 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231568&cm_re=16gb_DDR3-_-20-231-568-_-Product) PSU: SILVERSTONE SX500-LG 500W - $110 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256116&cm_re=SFX_PSU-_-17-256-116-_-Product) This IMO is a better value than the current Skylake 6700K @ $375ish. Very similar performance at much lower upfront cost & comes with a stock cooler if you want it. The savings should be used to beef up your video card purchase. Minimum I would recommend is a GTX 970 in your case. I like this particular 970: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121899 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Glad you're liking it! It's pretty nifty how a ~$319 upgrade can turn a PC from barely capable of playing games to something that's probably measurably superior to a game console. The GTX 970 is a really good GPU at an awesome price. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
