I'm using ZDL for ZDoom, GZDoom, and even PrBoom+

Same here. Before, I had to drag and drop the WADs/PK3s I wanted to play onto the GZDoom executable, and due to the size of my Doom folder (which is long overdue for a reorganization), it was very cumbersome. ZDL made life so much easier!

As for double-clicking the WADs/PK3s... I configured them to open SLADE3.

ZDL. With it, I don't have to drag and drop the files to the ZDoom .exe file every time. Specially useful, as someone noted above, for those who load many files to the game at once, like me. Just select which game to play, what source port would be preferred, and what files to load with it.

Simple.

ZDL it's the best for me. It's really useful to test a map on different source ports, and adding command line parameters when necessary is really easy.

Quick question as I've been trying out ZDL, how do you make the bastard open in the folder of your choice (c:\doom\wads for example) when adding custom wads to load? It always opens to it's own directory and it's so annoying.

some people even bother making scripts for launching specific PWADs. OK, for a few you really like I can understand the latter, but there are people who claimed they made one for each PWAD. Seriously?

I have a batch file for each PWAD. If I'm going to type the full command line, I might as well type it in a .bat file so I can reuse it. Just launching through the prboom-plus .exe is a bad idea, since that would load the wad in -complevel 17 instead of whatever the correct complevel for the wad is.

  1. Install pure vanilla DooM on a DOS PC (all versions, if you want), with nothing else on it but DooM and DooM-related utilities, and PWADs.
  2. Make an MS-DOS autoexec.bat that starts DooM automatically with each boot.
  3. If you wanna be fancy, you can make an MS-DOS startup menu to start the different DooM games or specific TCs, or boot to a (DOS-based, of course) launcher.
  4. ???????
  5. Now you're truly hardcore. Anything less is for pussies.

It has nothing to do with "hardcore" and everything to do with "one simple setup that can run nearly any non-ZDoom wad at its correct compatibility".

prboom-plus.exe handles MBF, Boom, and limit-removing just fine.

My "one batch file per wad" method handles pretty much everything that isn't ZDoom, and does it all at perfect compatibility.

I have two batches, one called "Doom_Mods" for quick tests that consist of basically one line of parameters, and another called "Doom_CE" with a menu for each iWad and another menu that I modify as I discover new mods I like to keep.
It's simple, really, and better for making a shortcut in my games folder on desktop than constantly drag and droping.

Option eleven leads to another menu on the same batch.
"Ultimate Doom II" is what I call a combination of Doom 2 + No Rest For The Living + Master Levels

I was partially replying to Maes and his "pure vanilla doom" post.

I already knew about PrBoom-Plus. It's probably my favorite SP port ATM.
