I started on 1990's and did some maps for doom 1-2 with deep. I had the limited version from it so I could use only something like 1000 linedefs per map which was frustrating. I think I tried to buy the whole version but I was very young at the time (10-12) so maybe I just couldn't find a way to pay it. I'm from Finland and I'm not native English speaker so my English skill wasn't very good. I had not good internet connection until something like 2000 so I couldn't be part of mapping community then.  Everything was done by trial and error. But making maps was maybe the coolest thing ever! My doom maps were very simple due the limit and lack of undestanding how to do cool maps.

 

I continued to duke nukem. Duke maps also were basic and visually simple. Those were best when played on LAN. Not mapped too much for duke and I concentrated more on playing guitar. Quake 2 forced to map again. I did deathmatch maps for LAN-sessions and they were liked. Half-life again made me to make maps. I tried to make massive single player capaign but it never completed. I realised how difficult is to make even one good single player map. Again I made some deatchmatch maps for LAN-playing. Then there was very long time when I concentrated on studying, working, etc. dull shit.

 

2012 there was news that Wolfenstein 3D was 20 years old. I was never quite enthusiastic about wolf but it reminded me about Doom. I played shareware doom again and thought why not to make my own map. So I started making one map for doom2 in 2012. I didn't finish it and for some unknown reason I continued the map in early 2016. Then I just got new ideas for maps and here we are.

Map10 is the map started on 2012. 2016 I added the large outdoor area. So there you can see the progression of me as mapper. This mapset uses only doom2 textures.

 

As you maybe have seen this, this is the quality where I'm currently at:

In that mapset I got a bunch of new textures so the quality has improved significantly. Some maps are older and at least I notice that some areas are not that good..

 

Now I'm coming to be as good as I've always wanted. I mostly can do the scene what is in my mind. Good textures are the basis. Without them you can't represent what you want. Very cool things can be done with limited resources though. But for example if you want forest, that can't be done with doom2 textures. I'm more into building worlds. So the gameplay may not be so good. Detailing takes now very much time so maybe I'm moving towards simplier style. Bigger architecture maybe. Let's see where this is going. I like this very much!

This wad was heavily influenced by Swim with the Whales -it's my favourite wad- so this is no accident! Aiming for a similar difficulty as well :D

I have made 2 wads so far, they were both... well, kinda bad... but 2 days ago I started working on my third wad, it doesn't have a name yet but i'm thinking of something like "redom" or something like that, it's better than the last 2 wads, It has direction, sticks to a theme, mostly small rooms but not claustrophobic at all, some big rooms too with major fights, mostly low tier enemies ( for now ) maybe as the map will advance there will be more difficult monsters but not too much, I also focus on the monster placement, placing monsters that will come to you and deaf monsters that you will stumble upon, also made it so you spend more time in the major rooms... I have few secrets for now but I'll try to place more, after some feedback from my last maps this time secrets will be more smart instead of requiring you to hug walls, the secrets will make sense, require you to look more closely if you care about them, they will be rewarding but not TOO rewarding ( no BFG, all the guns in one secret room ) but instead power ups, some pick ups that will help, hp. Also the pick ups are balanced in my opinion. Really proud of my map so far.

 

I'd post some screenshots but I don't feel like a photographer right now, I'd have to take good angles, present the map so you can feel it without playing it etc... It looks 3-4/5 good in my opinion. Maybe I'll post them tommorow ( unless I finish the map tommorow lol ) I'll post the map in the WADS & MODS subforum as always

Sorry also no pictures but possibly working on a 9 map wad that will be trap heavy to the point of ridiculousness with differences between skill levels. e - oh, and changes in geometry, too.

I never bothered messing with these, so I don't know... but I would guess the grey areas are 3D floors or portals considering how they overlap with the rest of the map?

More pictures of what will be the final area of the map most likely.

 

The final two pictures are me trying to show the lighting pattern that the building has, but it is something that has to be seen in-game for the full effect unfortunately. Pretty happy with this building overall -10k sidedefs later :| 

Made a lot of progress lately, but I'm heading into 60k+ sidedef territory and will likely have to get a new nodebuilder...

Just finish up E3M7 for my Bijou Doom 1 megawad which was done in nearly 2 hours.

 

Just one more map to go :)
