It would've been pretty cool to see that face as some monster that you could fight. It probably would've looked like a Hell Knight or Baron of Hell, only stronger and more sinister with those red eyes too.

It looks like it would have been some giant lizard demon that we'd have to fight. Just my opinion though. =3

What's the purpose of these columns in Heretic?

Also, textures in relation of d'sparil's cult:

d'sparil reclaims the serpents?

Labours of d'sparil?

1) that columns have decorative purposes, just like green / red pillars in Doom, I think...

2) i don't have any idea here, sorry... to me, is just a reference to D'sparil...

3) They looks like people that are jousting each other to me... maybe is a figurative way to praise the battling spirit of their honour and glory in the war against the people of the world in Heretic, giving their lives and soul for D'sparil greatness...

Those Eyes are supposed to be Baphomet (Essentially Satan but a Chaotic Neutral version of him)

Those Horned Guys are called (SATYR) in the texture files (SW1SATYR or something) I'm guessing it was either an Alpha/Beta Monster that function as a foot soldier or something for DooM or are supposed to represent Satan.

BFG tits are simple, they're an easter egg or control knobs.

What are these patterns at the top of textures BROWN1, BROWN96 and BROWNGRN?

Maybe they are for ventilation or something.

EDIT: Or more likely drainage.

None of those explanations plausibly answers ALL of the following questions: Why are they there at the top and horizontally along the entire wall, why so many of them and in such a strictly repetitive pattern, and why do they look like they do. IMO, these textures are ones of the most iconic textures in Doom, and yet they're hard to be explained realistically, despite depicting something as trivial as a techbase wall. Doom's semi-abstract design definitely benefits from their usage, though - or is it their appeal that benefits from Doom's semi-abstract design?

The colour under the shapes is slightly darker, as if it were a shadow. So my take on it is that they are meant to look as though they are protruding, and possibly have a light inside (which are switched off)?

Something like that anyway.

I would say that those top things are decorative (or possibly structural) wall extrusions that, when seen at the side, appear as triangles that slope down to provide a tiny overhange over the room. That would explain the regular intervals and the shadows.

I always thought that was a feminine face...a "mother" of demons of sorts.

But agreed...that would've been cool to see, much like how you see the Icon's face plastered on marble throughout the game.

It's decorative. I've seen similar patterns on real architecture.

Would anyone show any photos of such real architecture, please?

While it's not looking exactly the same, it does resemble 1960s brutalist style somewhat.

It's the kind of things you can find on precast concrete wall panels -- just the kind of modular stuff that the UAC would use to quickly build a Martian moon base when there are not much in the way of local material, so you're better off importing prebuilt modular elements from Earth and assembling them on site.

Here, look at this one:

Do you see it?
It's the Silas Center.

I've always wondered why all these random faces are plastered all over the walls. I just don't see any actual purpose besides demon decorating. This must be their idea of fashionable wallpaper:
