I don't think there's anything like an objectively best balanced map, already because different players use different strategies and make different amounts of mistakes, so it's all subjective.

Maybe if the discussion was narrowed down to maps with no room for error at all, then some top pro skilled players and/or (tool assisted) speedrunners would be able to call out such a map, though.

Maybe examples of good "medium" difficulty wads that are fairly consistent there?

I'd say Suspended in Dusk works, for example.

I play everything on HMP pretty much for the record, that's also a factor.
