having fun during the process itself is a strange goal

Wow, really? Well, I don't know then. I'm a simple man with the mentality of a 13 year old or so. Don't see the point in doing stuff that isn't fun. Better play dominoes or something instead.

I think you take mapping a little bit too serious tbh. It's a hobby for crying out loud, just make the things that you like and share it or don't share it.

To be fair, it's also both a career and an art that's a component of an art, so ...

I didn't really have fun mapping for a long time, I just did it for years and years until at some point it stopped making me nervous and I just had fun with it. I guess my advice would be to just keep doing it, and it will get easier eventually. Don't be afraid to throw anything away, either; if you keep worrying about quality, just start over again and again until you find something you like.

How about just a circle jerk where we all compliment and try to make each other feel good?

It's okay, you make good maps... they have good personalities

I laughed way too much at this.

When it comes to mapping I think the hardest thing I have to deal with is finding the starting point and fleshing out the idea from my head into the physical space. If I can translate what I see into the editor I can usually finish a map within days. Sometimes it takes me days just to figure out where to begin and how to proceed. But it seems like most other people have trouble with the follow-through rather than the initiation.

I find it's a good idea to start with a concept, an image that you've got in your head. Something where you say "Gosh, that would make a sweet context for DOOM!"

Also, I find that a piece of music that stirs the emotions helps too. I mean sinister, atmospheric music, like something by Krzysztof Penderecki (google and listen if you don't believe me!).

Currently finishing a map wad that contains one piece of the Resident Evil 2 OST.
